My bow guy does this out of his garage part time after work or by appointment. He's selective about his customers, and a good busy season before bow hunting funds his other hobbies. He's grown a pretty good shop a bit at a time. I think it'll go great for you and wish you luck.

This is kinda what I have in mind. I don't plan on being the cheapest guy in town. I plan on being the guy who knows what he's doing, who will let you drink a beer out of his fridge while he's working on your stuff, who will travel to your camp/house if need be, all for a reasonable and mutually agreeable cost.

If I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it for enough that I feel justified putting 100% of my attention into it.

Good business model.

It's good to be doing something you enjoy and getting something from it. Now if someone would just pay me to bowhunt . . . , well that's another story. Best of luck on your new endeavor!

Hey, Nutterbuster, I do hunter-friendly marriage counseling! (Seriously though, I've done this before... and I don't just mean when talking to my own wife either.)

Maybe you're already aware of this and have it in motion, but you should setup a business. I don't know what state you're in, nor am I a lawyer, so I can't say what would be best (LLC, S Corp, etc.).

You'll also need liability insurance and potentially other insurance and you should probably check on some things related to operating a business out of your home.

I'm not trying to discourage you, but suppose you're taking someone down into your basement to work on some stuff and they fall down your stairs or something happens with their bow while shooting and they decide to sue you. Even defending a legal case is so expensive it's near impossible for an average person to sustain. In my area, a decent lawyer will run at least $300/hour.

I hope it works for you, you seem to have a good head on your shoulders. I tried part time Gunsmithing for a few years. Made a little, lost a lot. My problem was not saying NO to people that concidered me a friend when they needed something. Amazing how easy it is to become Used If your not careful. Everyone wants a “buddy” deal

See I think that's where you're missing the whole point of this venture.... I'm sure you've heard Eagles' "Hotel California" - you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave. Someone falling down the stairs just expedites the process...

He's gonna put the joe dirt in tha hole!

That's exactly how I run my woodshop. I've long since paid off the tools and equipment, funded building a new shop out behind the house, and it funds all my hunting, shooting, and fishing habits. The wife is happy since I don't have to touch the budget income for my hobbies.

Atta boy Nutter!! Good luck and like you said once the initial investment is paid off then it’s all gravy

Headline lured me in fearing the worst ...but BAM! Good surprise.

I'd be your first customer if I lived closer and pay you in ice cold Miller Lite :smirk: while providing random stories chalked full w/hyperbole!

Congrats...

Good luck, Nutter. Sounds like you have a good idea of what you want and what you don’t want. If anybody can make it into a fun and enjoyable side hustle, it’s you.

And for CASH ONLY .....

Thanks for all the well wishes and advice folks. I have 0 idea what to expect.

Here's a very hypothetical question for you guys. How interested would you personally be in a bow tech that made "house calls?" EZ Press makes an adapter that let's you mount your press to a 2" hitch. I figure I might could travel to some shoots, or maybe schedule with hunting clubs on days they had cookouts and work days?

You better wear your saddlekini for those August and September days in south Alabama tuning bows on your tailgate...

Go in halfsies with me on an enclosed trailer for camping and hunting, and you can have it the whole offseason!
