Tonight I went in alone into the mountains with my bow in the National forest, shot a deer from the ground, tracked it, gutted it, and put the whole thing in my new MR pop up and hauled it out the 2 miles to the truck. I have killed a number of deer and some good ones, but going in cold scouting my way in and coming out with a doe in tough county with few deer meant more to me than most of the bucks I have killed. Maybe you guys don’t care, but to me it felt like I really accomplished something

Congratulations.....it really is a rewarding experience.

How is the back? Any spasms?

I just had a similar night....not trying to steal ur thunder at all but I've been wanting to share similar thoughts with y'all.

Saturday I had an afternoon to hunt and at 3 when I got to the check in station the guy working there told me the part of the wma I normally hunt was full of people....so I picked a spot on the map in unfamiliar territory and took off. Got in there, picked a tree, and got set up.....couple hours later dragging 1 out 200yds to the walk in road. Rules say I gotta take it to be checked in...so another walk back to recover the cart, unloaded cart back out there, and the loaded cart back to the truck....3 and a half miles (in hindsight if I know I'm going in deep like that again I probably take the cart on the road walking portion and chain it to a tree)......I don't know if u guys do much walking in sugar sand but I can tell u it's not fun....it was brutal but I'd do it again next weekend...

The odds are SO stacked against u that when it happens it's such a great feeling of accomplishment.... It's different than when u go into an area u are familiar with and set up.
Cheers...we can drink a beer together in imaginary interweb land...we deserve it..... hahahahah

I would agree it was a great accomplishment for you guys. Makes a man feel like anything is possible if we try hard enough, God Bless.

Congrats! That's been a lot of the fun for me last season and this season. I moved and have a ton of public land to hunt that I've never been on. It's been a completely different reward going in cold, scouting, and then getting on deer. Most times I go out, I'm going to a new place and scouting for fresh sign and setting up there.

I have a little land and deer right in my backyard that I could harvest, but it feels too easy.

Very cool , a pic with you coming down the mountain with a doe in the pack would have been super cool.

Congratulations! That is the ultimate in hunting.
I’ve been trying to do the same this year on public. I’ll head to areas that I’ve scouted before but really trying to make it happen where the sign dictates most of which are new spots. Even pulled my cameras and making myself hunt.
This is encouraging- well done.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! It is super rewarding that there are so many ways to find success in deer hunting, and fun doing it in new and different ways. I am about to take her over and get her donated to help feed people in this county that need the meat a lot more than I do. But the heart and tenderloins are for me!

That's awesome! Am I seeing and understanding this set up correctly? You strapped it between the bag and frame on the load shelf and hauled it out whole?

Yea! Just cinched down the straps and let her rip. Worked like a charm!

Edit: I do have the benefit of being a tall guy with long legs so nothing was dragging the ground

Was there a reason to not field quarter it and leave the carcass?

1. I planned to donate her and the processor doesn't like quartered-out deer
2. My field quartering skills are lacking and takes a long time but I can gut and load in 5 minutes max
3. Dark alone in the mountains with family at home waiting with dinner
4. It was fun

Dude that's so AWESOME! I mean it's one thing to be dragging out a deer in the dark reasonably close to the vehicle, but 2 miles!

If I go 2 miles in at the end of the day, I remove my arrow and drop my quiver 1.5mi beforehand. LOL.

BTW looks like a good healthy doe. That will be some great eats. Congratulations!
