I know this has probably been discussed but can anyone sum up the pros/cons of prusik and ropeman for tether attachment, and personal preference and experience?

I currently use Samson ultra tech 9mm for my tether, and 8mm static accessory cord for a prusik. It works but the accessory cord is very stiff and didn't cinch well at first.

I can tighten a ropeman 1 handed. I needed 2 or to use my teeth on the tag end of the rope with a prussic.

You're using the wrong size of pursik cord size of the pursik cord shouldn't be more than 80%of your climbing rope ! (10mm rope = 8mm prusik)in your case 9mm rope = 7mm pursik cord not 8mm pursik to big for 9mm rope!

I recall reading that somewhere, but I used leftover cord from my lineman belt for the prusik. I may downsize. Is there a specific type of cord to use for prusik.?

Personally for me, I view the ropeman kind of like a safety on a firearm. It’s a mechanics device that can fail. I’m not going to trust my life to it to hold me for hours, especially over time of using it. When using it on a lineman’s belt I think it’s different because it’s holding your leaning weight, not your entire body weight. Also you’re using it for short periods as you climb.

I feel much better about a prusik holding my full weight. I know people use the ropeman all the time for the tether, I just don’t feel comfortable. Maybe I’m paranoid but I don’t take the climbing stuff lightly especially with a wife and 2 kids to live and provide for.

100% agree! I use a Prussik on the tether and ropeman 1 on my linesman’s belt as well.

I agree with torvic if your using a prusik. Make sure your using the proper size combination of cord/rope for best results. Also, you can add a tender for ease of use (plenty of info on other thread about tenders). As stated above, many use a prusik for their simplicity and fear of a mechanical failure. I personally use a ropeman 1 on my tether and am not at all worried about a failure at all. When you see how the ropeman is actually intended to be used in climbing you’ll realize that hanging from it with your feet on a platform/steps is no problem at all.

I have not used a ropeman 1. I use prussik knots on my lineman and tether. I used a tender to make them function with one hand. A tender is fairly simple to make. I use a link from a chain and a piece of paracord. There are pics and posts throughout this site that illustrate and explain how the tender works. Once I added a tender, I no longer had a desire/interest to spend the money on a mechanical device that does the same thing. The only thing I am considering trying out over the summer is a distel hitch and/or a schwabish hitch. Both are friction knots that I want to compare to the prussik.

Also, you NEED to use a smaller diameter rope for the prussik. I would change that out. The success/FAILURE of a friction knot is related to rope diameters being used.

Be safe.

Wesspur.com Type in the search box pursik cord and it will give you all the sizes available by the foot !p.s. if you can't find 7mm cord use 6mm cord you're better of with a smaller cord diameter than a larger size diameter!
