Rappel line pull down cord

Anyone use something other than paracord? Thought I read a while back that using something with less stretch made a noticeable difference.

Was thinking 7/64 amsteel since I have excess to play with. Any other suggestions?

I think zing it or lash it would work well but you might have to wrap it around a stick for your initial pull. I have zero experience with rappelling but have used these cords a lot for my hammock tarps. Way more pricey than paracord though also a lot smaller.

I think you should try the Amsteel. My paracord was all tangled yesterday. I leave it attached to the loop on my climbing line and it's usually OK but yesterday it wasn't. I got it untangled in a few minutes. I have some 3/16 Harbor Freight UHMWPE I may try. I use the paracord to pull up my pack and later pull down my rope. I pull up my bow with my climbing line.

I think I am. Only zing it and lash it I found is 6x the quantity I need.

I’m using a Doyle hoist with carabiner - good so far

I use 1/8 paracord, packs up smaller.

I use an old retractable dog leash.

The leash gets used as my pull up rope on the way up. On the way down I connect the leash to the triangle on my rappel line and use the rappel tag end as my lower rope. Works good for me.

I'd say use whatever you use as a pull up rope or vice versa. Not worth overthinking and better to have something that serves multiple purposes.

This is mine.

Missed that option. Looks and sounds like amsteel. A smidge smaller than 7/64”

I used the 1.8mm dynaglide all last year. Love it. Paracord stretched to much. When you get a tough pull down grab a stick and do a couple wraps so you have a handle. WALK A FEW FEET AWAY FROM THE TREE AND PULL SO YOU ARE PULLING OUT RATHER THAN PULLING STRAIGHT DOWN. I may get one stuck tomorrow but so far I have yet to have a hang up.

I love me some Dynaglide (see my video on EWO for lightweight backcountry hoist). My question is are you somehow adding weight to the end you drop to the ground? I could envision it getting caught on a small limb half way down and having to partially climb back up. Obviously you don’t want so much weight that it would undo your girth hitch inadvertently.

My current system utilizes a small kite reel to store 30’ of Lawson Ironwire. The kite reel is just enough weight to ensure that gravity takes the whole line down.

If you used yours for a whole season ‘unweighted’ and didn’t have an issue, I might just ditch the kite reel.

it doubles as my rope to let my bow down so I have plenty of weight on it as to not get it hung on a limb. you could tie a water bottle to it or anything else with just a little weight. no need to pack something extra

Nice. I just changed mine out. I did a 7” eye splice and connected it directly behind my scaffold knot by prussic-ing the whole thing. Added a gear tie so that I can keep it wrapped up and on my rappel rope at all times.

Hmm....I may have to see how I like that. I like the idea of it being attached. I will never loose it or forget it that way.

7/64 amsteel works awesome. Is soft and has almost no memory so very kink free. I use one piece and haul / lower my bow with it. I have a spliced loop in each end and when done lowering bow, take the loop I am holding and place it in the triangle link on my rope. Then rappel down and pull rope down. If you wind it up figure 8 style, just take the bundle and toss it out next to the tree before you head up and it pays out perfectly.
