Looking for opinions Which rappel rope to use and also how many feet of it.

How long you need it depends on how high you plan on going. Some guys carry 30ft, some 35, some 40. 40 is pretty standard. They all work pretty well 8mm, 9mm, 10mm or bigger even. It all depends what you like. I hang from 8mm Resc Tech for packability but I wouldn’t hesitate to have 9mm ropes either. Alot of it is based on availability also. This morning HTP was in stock at EWO.

This^^^^
i found the canyon elite in stock (orange)got 40’ for like $55. I made a secondary bridge and the rest is my tether/rappel rope. I don’t use a separate tether, I just keep the rest of the rope in its pouch til I descend. 30’ is plenty for a tether/rappel. But I may go longer next time. I’m about to start climbing higher now that I’m getting the “hang” of it….see what I just did :sunglasses:

I’ve used the Sterling HTP 9mm and it worked well. In fact it worked very well to rappel with but was a bit stiff so storing it was a tad bit harder because it wouldn’t pack down as small. I recently switched to the C-IV 9mm and like it a lot. It’s a bit softer so it packs easier but still rappels very nicely.

The biggest advantage to the HTP is the price - $1 per foot at EWO compared to $1.40. Not a big difference but if you’re on a budget it adds up.

I agree with your conclusions of HTP. I liked it alot but dang it was stiff. The mantle construction on it makes for alot of friction on my figure eight on the way down but I didn’t mind it. The price is very attractive too. I think next time I buy rope it’ll be Canyon Elite and we’ll see how that goes.

I'm torn between Canyon Elite and Canyon IV. Just waiting for them to come back in stock before I make a purchase of 40' as a rappel rope. Pros/Cons of each?

Same here with HTP ..... worked fine and was cost effective but eventually got sick of the bulk. Switched to Canyon IV this year and it was a nice improvement. I carry 35' but I am thinking of getting a 25' length because 35' is overkill for most of my stands but I do need it for a couple.

Same diameter, one holds more weight. That’s the one I’d pick

C-IVis 4663 lbs, Elite is 6770 lbs, according to Maple Leaf Ropes. C_IV is more expensive at $1.95 CAD / Per Foot while Elite is $1.58 CAD / Per Foot>

I've heard that Elite is not as stiff and packs better because of that.

Well there’s your answer then

Sounds like it....Elite is stronger by about 50%, cheaper (at least here in Canuckia) and more supple/packs better. I'm gonna go with Elite when it's back in stock.

So why do so many climbers seem to use C-IV? :flushed:

Guys tend to just go with whatever other saddle hunters are using and Elite was not sold by EWO in the beginning. That’s my guess

The Elite has a bumpier cover than the C-IV, which also makes it appear bigger than it actually is. The C-IV also would likely absorb less water.
Maybe that’s why is seems big for 9mm…i got the elite. I love it and tying knots with it is a pure joy! Budget friendly too! I’ll probably buy it again maybe in a different color.
