rappelling down

Safeguard and htp9mm and be done with it

Let me preface this by saying I don’t rappel down and haven’t watched any of the videos, but why couldn’t you simply use a long tether with a length of paracord tied to the figure 8 at the top then rappel down the tether and pull the tether loose with the paracord when done?

You could! That’s how you get your rope back.

I sold my sys haulers last year but I put 36’ in an amazon bought dump pouch. Its not the best fit as an 8 on a bight knot plus saseguard is a bit bulky but I make it work.

I tried just flaking the htp into a dump pouch but it doesnt fit. I have to wrap it up around my thumb and elbow but its a squeeze to get the safeguard and knot to fit in the pouch at the end. Im not too stoked on the configuration yet. Still some work to do.

That's exactly what I do to get down. As long as the rope is there I climb up it as well. :grinning:

I use the a figure eight tide off as an auto lock with back up prusik while hunting. Then when I’m done for the day, just loosen the prusik and belay down. The auto stop knot allows me to go hands free to take down my WE stepps on the way down.

This may be a stupid Q, but how do you retrieve the Rappel rope once on the ground?

@like.2.fly
I am very interested in using oplux to repel down from the tree. I'm on a rope rescue team where I work, so I've been repelling for a good while. I've been researching it quite a bit the last couple Weeks. I saw where some were using the safeguard and some were using a figure 8. Although they say the safeguard isn't meant for the 8mm, some say if works fine as long as you have it backed up with an auto block. Sounds like your setup works fine as well also. I want to get a setup that's safe and works efficiently. Would you recommend your setup over the others?
Thanks

I originally wanted a Safeguard, but couldn't justify the cost. So I can't really comment on it or the Fig8, compared to the basic ATC type belay device I use for rappelling. I have heard from others the Safeguard is questionable on 8mm rope (out of spec). I've also heard Fig8 can impart twist in the rope during descent. These, plus the overall simplicity factor, are the main reasons I went with the ATC. The setup works well, is easy to operate, and feels safe/comfortable for me. But I'm sure there are other configurations just as good or better. It boils down to what you personally trust, and can afford.

Tie/clip paracord to your loop before you go down. Pull down the loop by tugging on the paracord. There's a few threads about this. Search around. TTFN

If you have a saddle, a tether and a lineman's belt and if you can climb using multiple sticks then you can one stick. It's the same process...except you move up your tether to just above head height and sit down in your saddle. Reach down and bring up the stick and place the cam cleat (button) nose height and attach. Push it down and climb up....and repeat. Then rappel down. I like to climb up to a branch about 25 feet up...put my rope around the branch and put the rope on the backside of the tree. That way when I do rappel down the rope is not sending me off the side of the tree...I just go straight down. Then I lower myself down about 5 feet and can use my rappel rope as my tether. So many different ways to do this....either way the learning curve is super short. Have fun.
Here‘s a video showing that exact climbing method you describe for those that are more of the visual learners

I did search and I only found one poor example imo. Sorry I'm not up to your standards there bud.

I think he was just trying to help. Anyway, I think you want to clip to the tag end. Also remember to remove anything that can get stuck in the fig8 of the girth hitch if you think there is something for the rope to get hung on ie a limb/nub. I have had a few instances of it getting slightly snagged and I pulled the tag end all the way up with my safeguard (freakin awesome btw) and it got held up at loop. From there I just had to bull whip it until it came down. Not ideal for quiet egress. Hope this helps... bud

Thanks, amigo! That’s the choice:
- pull tag end, easier but under some circumstances can get stuck

- pull loop end, harder to get going but you end up with the loop in hand and pulling the tag en through.

If you tie your pull rope on the loop, but closer to the knot it is much less likely to get stuck

I will clip in near knot on loop tomorrow and try it. Rappelling with the safeguard at least gives me something to look forward to when its time to call it a day.

This has worked flawlessly every time. Picture taken at bottom of tree once rope has been pulled down. I use a very small wire gate carabiner and paracord. Attach carabiner behind figure 8 on a bite at hunting height, rappel down rope (this is 9mm HTP), pull down on paracord.

You can incorporate a D ring but I’ve found it unnecessary.

This worked good today. Although I have yet to not get the rope stuck on a stob. Im getting a lot better with the safeguard as well. All the dangle of ropes and straps get to be too much but I hope to get a routine.
