I really like using an ATC descender with an autoblock.
You can stop and start whenever you want. Pausing to take down equipment is the main use for the autoblock.
I have another rappel device that has horns on it to lock off. I think it's too much trouble for these short rappels and you tend to bounce when you unlock.

Rappelling is so incredible. I feel very safe doing it. I feel very cool doing it. I'm down on the ground in like 15 seconds. Pulling your rappel rope down out of the tree, and neatly wrapping it up is the worst part.
I have to say, I've been guilty of purposely staying in the tree a bit longer, just so that when my hunting buddies come by, I can rappel down
I feel much safer rappelling down than I do climbing down with spikes in the dark. And like you said, I feel like a silent ninja. The cool factor is always important
Where does a guy find video on how to do this in a hunting scenario?! I dont find anything on youtube!
What do you want to know? The main difference is you are rappelling down a tree and you might be in the dark
Well everything i guess i know nothing about rapelling but the tree spikes and rapel down sounds great to me! Just mainly wondering about the gear and the how to!
I have a related question: When you rappel down, is it required to anchor your rope above a branch to secure it?

No. I have never done this. It's just cinched around the trunk. It can't fall down as long as there's pressure on the rope.
Some guys canopy anchor and some guys like to basal anchor. Base anchor requires a longer rope.

Here you go. Keeps rope nice and tidy, quick, and works great for throw line too - just use thumb and pinky instead of neck and palm.

It's funny, you never stop learning. I've climbed trees for a lot of years both professionally and recreationally and have never seen that method. I like it. Although you might look a little weird in a customer yard wrapping rope around your head......
