I have a 40ft 5/16 ultra tech rope I'll be using for tether and rappel this year. I'm trying to eliminate a backpack and additional weight I'm carrying in, so I used some spare mesh material to take a stab at creating a new saddle bag for carrying it.
This is what I came up with.
Holds the whole rope plus safe guard and delta link in the main space, has side pockets adequate for separately storing my gear hanger (hawk hook+paracord+camjam) and lineman's belt (with ropeman and biner). I hate dropping things in the same space as my rope, something always gets tangled.
The mouth of the bag has rubber coated wire in it that nicely holds both open or shut and is one-hand adjustable- just squeeze shut or bend open. I wanted to eliminate buckles, snaps, velcro, zippers and extra molle strap sounds/weight, but still keep it easy to dis/connect and use. I think I've nailed it.
The brown strap across the back is just tacked down and will be beefed up and then connected to my saddle molle loops with a small s-biner or maybe 2 if I want to spread its fully loaded weight out.
It's 12 inches tall, 5 inch diameter, + two 4 inch wide, 9inch deep side pockets. Weighs 2.4oz. Is silent.
The surplus sustainment pouch I previously used has too much extra space but no pockets to separate, was noisier and weighed 8.6oz. I think the water bottle attachment Dano sells is also 8oz., but has zippers I don't like.
If anyone has any improvement ideas, I'd be pleased to hear them.
