Ropeman 1 and Amsteel

Man, amsteel is hollow, I think you might be playing with fire, it will work until it doesn't as long as you get the right size amsteel. I'm running 1/4" whoopie sling for bridge, 7/64" daisy chain for mini shikar, and 8mm for belt, tether, and rappelling rope. I like amsteel, but not with a mechanical device. And this is coming from the guy who is rappelling with a figure 8 in a non traditional configuration where if I don't keep it loaded with weight it could pop off the line.

In summary, I like amsteel, I am dumb, I dont like this idea because it makes me feel unsafe.

I hope you don’t try it. This is setting offnall kinds of alarms in my head.

by the way, i am running rope with a distel hitch and tender and like it better than a ropemanin terms of ease of adjustment.

Under no circumstances is this a good idea. There’s a lot of other good lightweight options that are actually viable.
If just trying to shave weight & bulk then oplux & Kong duck. Personally I prefer a bit heavier LB predator w/RM1. Amsteel is hollow & you can’t use any kind of mechanical prussic on it.

I used it for about 5 seasons, and finally went to Oplux.
The problem with Amsteel is that it will fray like crazy and it has a tendency to flatten on you to were the ascender could slip. So if you choose a rope diameter you have to account for that. I never had any problems with slipping, but I didn't like the fraying and felt that the Oplux was a better option.

I tried it for about 2 seconds years ago. It just slipped and made the amsteel look funny. That was back when nobody had heard of the full bury. I suspect that would change results. I did a full bury on my bridge and using an amsteel prusik with great results. Nobody would have done that few years ago, as it wouldn't work without the full bury. I rappel now, so amsteel tether isn't on my radar.
