Ropeman 1 has larger teeth that grips the rope, and is less damaging to the sheath of the rope and is designed for 10-13mm ropes. The Ropeman2 is capable of securing smaller diameter ropes, I believe down to 8mm. There are many posts on these devices on this forum and several YouTube videos that explain the differences. Ropeman 2 is a good product, but I think you need to pay more attention to the type of sheathing on the rope. I also believe it has been redesigned and is less damaging to the rope that previous versions. I think most people here use Ropeman 1.

These devices are all safe if you do not use them as fall arresters. The Ropeman 2 should work fine for positioning or ascending.
