I recently made the bold statement on another forum that a saddle is stronger than a tree stand because our tether ropes could probably be used to tear a tree stand off a tree.

So here's my idea to test this, for this theoretical person with a garage full of gear:

1. hang a modern hang on stand on a tree
2. attach a long piece of oplux to the tree stand
3. run that oplux back to a carabiner on the ground
4. clip that carabiner onto the bridge of a saddle
5. attach a tow strap to the back of the saddle
6. attach tow strap to truck
7. pull with truck and see what breaks first

First, where does everyone think the first break will happen?

My thought is you need a straight down pull. Pulling sideways will put uneven pressure on the stand. Which is likely to fold up like a tin can regardless of how you pull on it, while the saddle should be ok.

My. 02 cents

good suggestion, we'll put a pulley near the base of the tree and thread the rope through it so that the truck can pull straight down on the stand

PS....my bet is that the stand will fail where the cables attach to the platform or post or if not there then maybe the cam buckle on the strap

Depends on the tree stand and where you attach the rope to it...

ok, let's do some hypotheticals

let's say the stand is a lone wolf assault 2 hang on, the rope is wrapped around the end of the stand through the grating but it is grabbing a boot length of platform so it is covering several openings in the grating (edit: in the center of platform left to right), and the rope is pulling straight down on this point

where does it break first along this chain?

it seems your post admits that the stand will break before the saddle...but you just aren't sure where at yet

Outer edge of tree stand platform will give out quickly is my bet

I would put a rigging sling through the grates and not the rope, otherwise the rope might break from the 90* bends along the edges of the grating.
I said outer edge before seeing your last post on how you planned to rig it. So now I say the cable attachment points pop first, not sure if it will be at the platform or the seat post.
On another note, I recently sold one of those stands and kept my original LW Assault as a memento of all the years we spent together.

Yep, that's right where one of my stands broke a few years ago with my daughter in it.
The plastic coating on the cables hides the rust!
