Saw or Pruners??

Can’t believe nobody has said EZ kut ratchet pruner. I don’t hunt without one. They advertise that they easily cut 1.5” diameter limbs, but I’m certain I’ve circle cut stuff closer to 2 in. Take it slow and they’re silent. used to use saws but they’re way to noisy and cause a lot of movement. EZ kut fits perfectly in the side pouch of an Sys hauler ES. And they’re tough, the blades last for years, I’ve cut leg bones with it when quartering.

That's what I carry, probably have it 20 years and still on the original blade.

I broke one and didn’t have a saw backup. Had to find a different tree to climb. This was probably 10 years ago. Maybe I just got a dud or tried to cut too big of a limb. My pocket boy can cut big limbs.

Idon't carry either, no cutting on public..... Would a leatherman tool take the place of both? I have one from Gerber that has a nice little saw and also the wire cutter part would snip small stuff

I have (had) 2 EZKut and I hated them. The ratchet on both of mine would fail to engage ALL THE TIME.
I would start making a cut, get half way thru, and the ratchet would slip...over and over. If I had my Felco pruners, I would have already cut thru and be on to the next cut. But with the EZ, I would be standing there, frustrated, cranking over and over trying to get the ratchet to grab. I dropped one of my pair walking out one day. I looked for them for about 30 seconds and then just kept walking. Better off without them. They sucked horribly.

I like both.Use them on 90% of my public land hang and hunts. How a fella can be comfortable siting in a bald open tree with no cover is beyond me.And then act surprised when you get busted.Lol. If you can only have one The saw is more versatile But if you don’t have room for both You need to take some of that useless crap out of your pack. JMO

Yeah, if you have small weak hands they can be hard to use.

The Hooyman shears above look gimmicky and have less than stellar reviews on amazon. If the EZ Cuts are not desirable either, what is the most trustworthy pair of pruners available.

Speak to me like I've never held a pair of quality shears :)

The ez kuts work well, at least when I used them thy did. Ratcheting shears make it easier to cut through thicker diameter material. I can't speak to how long they will hold up or whether or not the ratcheting mechanism will eventually break or give you problems. I don't actually own a pair just used someone else's. Corona shears are what I use at work. The bypass pruners are really durable easy to sharpen, and nothing to break. Take the little rubber handles off as soon as you get them and throw those in the garbage. That's what I would recommend.

I carry both. I prefer to use my Florian ratchet pruners, because they're quieter, but sometimes a small folding saw is the right tool for the job.

Are Florian available? After hearing the Wensels rave about them, I tried to buy some last year. Seemed like maybe the were no longer made?? A couple months ago, I tried a pair of Florian that my buddy has...they were impressive.
For the last 6 months, I've used Lanemaker ratchet pruners that Treehopper sells.
I really like them. I put them thru the rigors...cutting thousands of branches up to one inch to 2 inches. Really good pruners.

Pruners from local hardware store. That’s all i need for branches up to an inch or so in diameter. the trick is once you start the cut just continue to squeeze and rotate the pruners back and forth and it takes a surprisingly little amount of effort to cut decent branches.

They were last time I knew, but I've had mine for years and they're still in great shape.

I carry a very old pair of Boker bypass pruners and a Gerbers saw when I squirrel hunt the deer woods. I make some noise when I saw but still shoot all the squirrels I want and the deer I spook won't remember it a month or more later. I mainly am trimming shooting lanes that have been cut for years.
