Scent wicks?

I like to use scent wicks and drag rags during the rut with a little bit of doe in heat and buck urine. In the past I used the store bought cotton scent wicks and just keep refreshing them with new scent everyday. Then I got to thinking and wanted to use fresh wicks everyday, but didn't want to have to buy a ton of them. Last year I used unscented tampons, but attempting to tie the little string around a branch, in the dark with cold or gloved fingers was a pain. What is everybody using for scent wicks, and does anybody have any ideas on how to make them easier to hang?

I sure miss the days of 35 mm film canisters, I would use a cotton rope drag, then put it back in the film canister after I was done hunting

When I use scent I use a gel but I don't see why you can't use liquid as well. I got some alligator clips that I tied them together using a small string. On one side I tied a small piece of reflective flagging so I could see it in the dark. I would use a film canister and cut q-tips to a length that would fit into the canister. I would grab a q-tip in one alligator clip and dip it in scent and the other I would clip to a branch. I'd use each one for a couple of sits and then throw it away and get a fresh one. I would store the q-tip with the scent in the canister. On the outside of the canister I would wrap a bit of duct tape around the outside and pinch 3 wings into it and I would clip the alligator clips for storage. I'll see if I can post a picture at some point.

You can buy film canisters on the internet for cheap. The film is all but gone, but the cans still get love. I keep a dozen around the house at all times.

i can’t help you with scents, they’re not worth the trade offs to mE

Have you gents actually had success with scents? I feel like when I tried them I didn’t notice a thing... sometimes I actually wondered if it did more harm than good.

I had a 137lb 5 pt buck come running early one morning for the cottonballs Loaded with Tinks 69. I also had a drag rag following behind me. He followed the exact path I took. I shot him at 5 yards.

I've had more positive results than negative. At least that i know of. I had a little four point follow about 10 yards behind me in the dark for about 50 yards once. Kinda creepy.

I forgot about the plastic dividers I made for the inside to keep the q-tips from sticking together.

Here's the pic. I've had good luck with scents. This season I didn't get any in time.

I've had good luck with scents. It's important to not use to much. I remember when I used kotex plugs. After a few uses it would blow up so bad I couldn't get it in the canister, the worst part was it was so big when I redipped it in the scent it was hard to not put to much on. I had a buck walk by one that I over did, and as soon as he walked to it he bolted. I have another experience with one buck I named the coffee buck. It was a morning sit and I was wearing a toboggan cap so no brim to block the sun, and the only tree I could get in with a good wind was facing right into the sun. After 9am ish my eyes needed a break so I did a check around and started to have some sips of coffee and about the time I was on my second or third sip I see some movement out of the corner of my eye and this nice 8 pt was nosed up right to my scent wick. He caught me sitting down with a thermos in my hand. I did not get that deer. The scent will bring them in but it won't hold them long. I have more stories where I've had more good luck than bad. You have to be mindful of how much and where you place them. I always wore rubber gloves to hang my wicks.

Kurt how early do you put them out and when do you pull them off? Wondering if putting them on and off the the day of the hunt is worth it.

I use doe in estrous and our season starts in mid Oct. so I'll start using scent as soon as the season starts. Early I want to be the first doe in estrous and definitely through the rut.
