I often have deer in our horse pasture. My dad and uncle clean up finding sheds on their horses every year.. Our horses also have also been handy tracking wounded deer and covering ground.58332794312__B2A8F2D1-CC91-46F6-9338-780C166BB213.jpgIMG_1016.jpg

Okay, this is not really a story about hunting from a horse but there is a connection between a horse and hunting.
Several years ago I was heading to a local stand on a nice warm afternoon in early October. I was walking down a horse trail when I see someone riding a horse heading my way. Turned out it was a young chick riding that horse in her underwear, almost naked. ***??
I started thinking I was gonna be writing a letter to Penthouse magazine, lol..."Dear Penthouse, there I was...."

So a few days later, there I was in the lunchroom at work telling the guys (that were most likely thinking I was full of crap) when one of the other guys said "Was that YOU in the woods?"
Turned out the girl was a friend of his and she was also a Dead Head (Grateful Dead fan), and she and her family like to dabble in LSD and she told him about seeing some dude sneaking thru the woods while she was dropping acid. She was tripping when she saw me. I think she was a bit freaked out wondering if this guy in camo, carrying a bow, was real or a hallucination.
True story.
I wonder what kind of other critters she "saw" from horseback? Boone and Crockett bucks behind every tree!

Slightly off topic but this post jogged my memory, One of the best hunting books I ever read told a true story of a young boy hunting in Southwest Miss along the river and pursuing deer with hounds from horse back. Well worth the read about hunting traditions in the south and growing into a man. I recommend it to anyone but especially if you have a teenage son that enjoys hunting.

I don’t know... I’d love a German Shorthair Pointer or a Blue Lacy at some point. I’d LOVE to have a good shed/scouting dog.
You can see my GSP in my avatar. Best dog I ever had. But be aware, she needs/wants at least 30 minutes of running and brain exercise twice a day. Morning and evening, hunting season or not.

I killed my first buck with a bow horse back hunting on public land. Most of the time if you dismount on the opposite side from the deer they will just stand there. I've killed a several does by resting my gun on the saddle with the horse between me and the deer. I was never brave enough to attempt a shot from the saddle. My dad is no longer able to ride so we sold our horses. If I had the hunting system that I have now back then I would have been able to hunt some really remote locations. I've been thinking about buying a mule for that very purpose.
