Just noticed DanO offers sewn OCB straps eliminating the metal hook.

What sewing method/technique would one use to DIY one of these using a strap with a metal hook?

I don’t see them sold that way on @DanO site. I would like refer the hook and it’s pretty easy to silence but not overly noisy stock if you are deliberate in attaching it quietly.

Go to view products under his Ring of Steps Strap and Buckle Combo

“NEW: Ring of Steps strap sewn to the over center buckle. All in one design eliminates the metal flat hook.”

Well I’ll be. His stuff is sewn with a box stitch. I would do a good box stitch and a couple bar tacks if sewing my own. I think I would still prefer the metal hook but that’s a personal thing.

If I’m thinking of this right, that’s how we use to use the OCB before we discovered using the metal hook. If it’s seen on then you have to thread the tag end through the buckle each time. It’s better having the buckle threaded already and all you have to do is hook in and cam over.

That’s what I thought too. I suppose these OCBs aren’t so bad to thread once you get used to it. Not sure which I’d prefer.

That is correct. I had a few requests for the buckle to be sewn directly onto the strap and to eliminate the hook. Reduced noise potential (slight), minor weight savings, cheaper, fewer parts. But it does require you to thread the strap through the buckle each time.

I actually find it easier to thread the strap every time. Don't ask me why but for me it is just easier for me. By product of that is the elimination of one more piece of metal. Everyone is different, good to see even MORE options.

Thats how I had mine set up when we 1st started using OCBs. It's a good option to have. Options are good. I like the hook option.

So confirming the current options on your site (as I'm looking to get some more straps for squirrelstepping into the sky) you either buy
  1. Strap with sewn-on ocb
  2. Strap with hook, plus separately order the buckle?
My original order it looks like I'd purchased a single line-item, but the price was the same as the 2 ala-carte items in 2 (if this makes sense).

  1. Strap with sewn-on OCB
  2. 7' Strap with flat hook (camo) with separate OCB or Ratchet
  3. 7' Strap with flat hook (olive drab) with separate OCB or Ratchet

Got it. Time to go play around and confirm if i still prefer the hook.
