Share your Climbing methods

Re: Share your Climbing methods

I did see that post but I don't want to have to have branches available to use the spikes so I'll just have to try it with a platform. It would be ideal to climb without needing the platform but I just can't see doing it for a long time.

Re: Share your Climbing methods

Give it a try (after) you get comfortable climbing with spikes. Any tree you pick is gonna have at least one branch at the hight ya wanna hunt. The branch is only to take weight off the spikes and give your legs a break. Only need one branch but 2 is better.

Re: Share your Climbing methods

Have you used the short Sport Climbers before? I am wondering how they compare to the beefier lineman's spikes for comfort. These strap only around your ankles.

Re: Share your Climbing methods

No never tried them. And lineman spikes and tree spikes are different. Shorter spike on a lineman spike not good for thick bark tree's.

I exclusively climb with Lone wolf mini sticks, for my mobile setup. For my presets I use Skyhooks with lag bolts. FOR THOSE WHO USE API SKYHOOKS, I have found the last few lag bolts ever produced by the original machine. The guy bought what the supplier, known as montanafreak on ebay, had left. He's on AT and he's getting prices together now to sell. I will disclose his contact information in the classifieds. I gotta look out for my saddle hunting buddies.

Just added three 20' sticks for very remote areas. I'll put them up when the snow melts. Plan to buy more too.

Mobile is four muddy 20" sticks. Love the double step especially for hanging. I love the saddle but nothing beats carrying no stand at all.

I created two paracord loops. One just off each hip at the loops on my evo. Once at the tree I stick the foot of a stick on one side and same on the other. One goes on the tree. Step up set second stick. At top I hang my pack on a hme strap that has three hooks. Pull up bow and hang it on one and the quiver on the third. One trip up the tree.

I pack my sticks strapping them into my kuiu ultra on the bottom where traditionally most would put a tent or sleeping bag.

I've been doing something similar my past few mobile sits. I have 3 lone wolf sticks with a 2 step custom aider on the bottom stick, and a one step custom aider on the next 2 sticks. I originally made the aiders just like the "higher, lighter, faster video" but I am modifying them to replace the cobra weave cord with rubber tubing. The rubber tubing is rigid and makes it easier to get your foot into the loop. I'm hitting 20 foot with this setup and considering I can sling the 3 sticks over my shoulder and they weight next to nothing it is pretty amazing. I will probably add a couple of strap on steps to my bag to round out the system in case I need to go a little higher. I am carrying the sticks up with paracord hooked onto the plastic hooks on the side of the evolution, although I'm not thrilled with the placement of the hooks.

Once I get this system worked out I'll take some pics and share them.

This guy pretty much covers them all

Re: Share your Climbing methods

I use three or four modified Hawk Helium Sticks. I modified them by adding a Lone Wolf versa button and ropes. I also cut them to 21 inches in length and then I removed one set of steps and moved the bottom two steps to bottom of new length stick. I also use a rated nylon climbing strap so I can hang from my bottom steps and this gives me another 20 inch step for each stick. I easily get 5 foot with each stick and then another 2 foot to my platform. 3 sticks gets me to 17+ foot platform and 4 sticks gets me to 22+ foot. Each stick, rope and strap weighs in at right around 2 pounds. They are quiet, pack together nicely and are safe with the dual steps. The strap when hung over the dual bottom steps stays open and is easy to get foot into when climbing or ascending.

Re: Share your Climbing methods

I just revised my "system" and climbed yesterday. I use a Guidos Web, a Muddy tree stick with a 5 step Etrier- I climb up to the top step, lanyard off to tree, connect my length of arborist climbing rope, connect a Trango Cinch and rappel down enough to retrieve the stick. I then move the stick up as high as I can reach-repeat sequence- about 3 times and I am up 16'-18'. Set my strap on ratchet strap with 5 Ameristeps, connect my Web, attach my bow holder to tree(that I pull up separately) and I am rocking! When I am done I can lower my bow then rappel out of the tree and pull down my climbing rope using my retrackable retrieval line. I use minimal energy and don't have to try and find steps after dark yipeeeeee! I can stow everything in the fold of the back of the Guidos Web and all I have in my hands is my bow in case of a shot on the way in to my spot. ;)

Hi Paul. You should do a video. I've never heard of a trango cinch and I'd love to see the rappelling.

Re: Share your Climbing methods

I will try and make a video but I am switching to a Gri Gri2 device to rappel after consulting with some tree climbing buddies. I will use the same techniques as I described but just a different descender. If there was a way to cinch a climbing line around a tree remotely from the ground then I would have something neat!

How hard is it to get your line back? I can see this system being really nice coming out after dark and a LOT faster! I use the one stick method now and coming down takes a little while.

Don't the arborist guys use a slingshot and a weighted bag attached to some Zing-It get their ropes up the tree?

I'm thinking of trying it as well Paul :)

Be careful and do the research when choosing a rappel device. I have a Trango cinch that I use within a lanyard system. It works great for that purpose and it would seems like it would work great for the small amount of adjusting and/or rappelling down from 20-30 feet. I also have a Gri-Gri and have used that primarily for rappelling from 150-200 ft. and most recently 300 ft. (although that was no fun and I will not do it again).

I have NO experience with the Gri-Gri 2 but some have been re-called. The most important difference to me between my Trango cinch and my Gri-Gri is this. The Trango will engage and grab the rope by itself even after you have taken your weight off of it and then put it back again. The Gri-Gri needs to run over the bumper and be held while you put your weight in it. At this time the Gri-Gri will be engaged and grabbing your rope. If you were to stand up and take your weight off of it and then try to sit back again it would not stay engaged. A device that engages at all times unless you are pulling a handle to descend would be optimum and much safer in my opinion.

I have an extra Summit climbing stand platform for sale. It can be used to 'sit and climb' with a saddle. This is the smallest platform by Summit (used with the Open Shot). It's the SD version and like new. Weighs a hair under 10 lbs. $100 tyd.

Re: Share your Climbing methods

How many of you guys use lag bolts? To me it seems like they would be easy to fall out, and dont have much of a base to place your foot on.

Share your Climbing methods

I like the one stick method. Especially when hiking some distance. I decided to rig up a second stick (both with foot loops) for shorter hikes. With the two steps and the strap on platform I can hit 17'. If I want to go higher I can. DIY Sportsman has a good YouTube video of this. He also recommends using a grappling hook as a hoist. That way if you drop your stick you can pull it back up.
