Shooting a bow on your off side using a saddle

Saturday I decided to use my sit drag saddle on the ground again. Found a real nice blow down with a tree in the middle for setting up. Trimmed some lanes and practiced some shot angles before settling in for the hunt.

My problem came when I found that if a shot opportunity came from my right (I shoot right handed) moving my left hand with the bow around the tether and bridge with an arrow nocked caused a lot of movement.

How do you all shoot on your off side while in a saddle?

I walk around the tree to my right so that I can turn my body to the left to shoot. Or I walk around the tree to the left as far as I can so that I can shoot back to the right. For me it all depends on the tree and exactly where to the right of me the deer is.

Not easy on the ground, you can reach the bow around the tree if there is room. Or stand and turn around like us platform guys can do.

I have practiced shooting left and right. A few people may not be right or left eyed dominant - me. So far I seem to be just about as accurate either way. It does not hurt try. I just did it for fun in the late fall and I intend to explore this a little more this summer. I do use a cross bow so that might mean it is easier. I use a cross bow because of a rotary cuff problem. I have never tried shooting a deer that way but I am going to practice it .

Shooting a crossbow is much like a rifle. You can switch eye and hand to make it work but it takes a little practice. Bows are left or right handed. You will probably mess up your bow and or you arm/back because your muscles are not used to it and your bow is not setup for it.

I personals tepid to the right side and twist behind me to get that shot (right to back right for a right hander person.) I do not try to shoot front right due to the movement you mentioned. I did try to get a squirrel one day but I walked around the tree to get him.

I hand my bow under the bridge, hold the top limb with my right hand, reach through the bridge with my bow hand and grab the bow handle. I can shoot to the right very easily that way with the bow almost against the tree.

I did think about that, but didn't try it. The reason being I was on the ground in a blow down the arrow would have hit the tree limbs. I bet that is the way to go without any obstructions. Thanks for the replies.

Several years ago I purchased all the material to build a wood ilf bow riser that could be shot left or right handed. I could REALLY use that bow in the saddle! I might be digging it back up.

I have seen composition bows like that that shoot through the middle and you can grip with either hand. It is interesting but I do not believe that I am all that corridinated and I really like my Bob Sarrels Blueridge short riser longbow. It is the best longbow I have ever shot!

Hope you find it and even better, post a picture so we can see what it looks like!

They have what is called a "shoot through" riser. The idea is to minimize cam lean and torque. Never seen one that wasn't on a target bow. They are sometimes custom and very expensive, though some target bows come with them stock.

My idea was to use the same side of the bow with two rests. The limbs would be tillered even so that you just flip the bow upside down when switching hands. Pretty experimental. It would be tough to get a good tune I think.
