Don't misunderstand my point. I'm not saying that what you're dong isn't a good way of doing it. What I was trying to share was that there are non-vocal ways to get deer to stop where you need them and the Dougherty guys' technique was a licking branch and they had creative ways to place the lick where they needed them to be.Tom, if an over hanging branch happens to be right where you want the buck to stop, that would be fine. If there's not one, don't worry about it. Again, these are not mock scrapes, they only exist to stop and deer exactly where you want them to stop for a shot. Also, with an overhanging branch, the bucks head will be up if he's tending the branch making it harder to remain undetected while making a shot. If there no branch, his attention will be on the scrape, at least in my experience.
I do somewhat disagree when you say these are not mock scrapes. They are to a degree.
