Shopping for yester-years bows

TLDR: I’ve got a buddy whose looking to upgrade his really old bow (early 2000’s PSE), to a newer but not brand new model. What past flagship bows would you recommend, and at what prices?

I’m not sure where to post this, but this seems like the appropriate place.

Before I got into bow hunting last year, way back in 2011, I fell in love with The styling of the Matthew’s Z7. I made excuses of why I shouldn’t get into bow hunting then, and even if I did, there was no way I was dropping $1K on a bow at that time in my life.

Now that I’m into bow hunting, I have a solid bow and I don’t have a *need* for another compound yet. But I still find myself looking for yesteryears flagship bows. Not for myself necessarily, but also for my friend whose looking for an upgrade.

What past flagship bows would you recommend, and at what prices would they be considered fair or even a steal?

Elite Judge. Sweet bow and a smooth shooter.?

It's always good to be able to shoot them first. Obviously, make sure the draw length is right either way.

I have a Matthews DXT with brand new cables and strings I'd part with. It's maxed out. SKB case and some arrows. PM me if interested. Location might be a deal breaker as shipping might be prohibitive depending on location.

If hes on a budget, have him check out a bowtech assassin. I've had mine for 5 years and after trying the latest and greatest I have no reason to change.

I’d say he’s on a budget. Probably looking for a bow for $400 or less.

Always good to shoot before you buy. I use to shoot a couple new bows every time I was at the bow shop. If I really liked the bow I would write it down. Let’s just say the switchback was a hot new release last time I was in a bow shop. That’s sad. Probably has something to do with the birth of a child 13 some odd years ago. That really put a dampener on my bow hunting. He’s old enough now to go sit in a blind or stay home so I am back at it. I don’t know how things are now but companies like browning had good bows for the money but parts support later on was terrible. I like Mathews. Not because they were the hottest new thing out in the late 90s when I started bow hunting but because they use the same cams on so many bows that I can still find any part I need for my 2003 FX. I don’t really like the bow but that’s ok. I’m sure the other leading companies are the same. I really liked some of the Hoyt’s I’ve shot. I’ve got a Brute force that’s a few years old that was less than 400 new. It’s not my favorite either. My nest bow will be easy to work on. Probably have 36” axle to axle. It doesn’t need to be super fast either. There are plenty of used bows out there. Local classified ads and even pawn shops tend to have good deals. If you have a local dealer that carries a couple brands try to find something you like that they can service. Doesn’t have to come from them just their brand. Even in well built bows there will be problems and if you ruin a cam, or have a limb problem often times they will have something to get you going. It helps if you pay up that 10% and buy accessories and arrows from them as well.

I have a 2014 PSE Premonition. I have owned and shot a lot of bows and I really like it. No plans to change it anytime soon. Pretty fast bow for 60lbs.

I have to agree with @JibberJabber about the Switchback. When I finally upgraded from my 93/94/95 Proline I bought a used SwitchbackXT and I love it.

I like my bear arena 30, 345 IBO

This bear escape looks nice too.

Any way he goes he's going to have to spend $80-100 for a new set of strings/cables plus installation. $400 for a "flagship" bow is going to be tough, but for a full set up decent bow it would be very doable.

Mathews Z7 hard to beat the Z. He should be able to find a nice used one for under $400 I did.
