Shroom Season

The kids came a took my popup camper today so they could air it out before going camping for Memorial Day. I was mowing around it and lo and behold, there he was. First mushroom of the year and its in my yard under where the camper was. :tearsofjoy:

I’m in sw Wisconsin. Ive only found three morels this year. I found quite a few gyromitra brunnea and a gyromitra korfii this year. This is my first year identifying these. I was scouting some public yesterday and came across 12 lbs of golden oysters. It was quite a score.

That is cool. Never seen them before. Are they tasty?

Yes. I’ve always heard them referenced as false morels. I joined a false morels demystified group on Facebook. There’s several gyromitra species, some edible and some require some special prep to be edible. The gyromitra brunnea and gyromitra korfii are as edible as morels. They require being fully cooked. I thought they were very good and I’d likely take them over morels although I think morels are excellent.

I'll add this to the list of reasons to get a camper next time I try to talk my wife into it.

I'm still a little nervous about picking any other mushrooms, been doing the research but not yet confident enough. I do want to try some giant puffballs this fall though, those are pretty easy to identify.

I’ve tried the puffballs. I wasn’t impressed. They’re basically flavorless, at least the ones I tried. Most of what I’ve learned is on Facebook groups. You quickly realize by comments who knows their stuff when it comes to mushrooms. I look at all the pictures and try to id them myself before reading comments. I then read the comments to see if I’m right. This has been a huge help in learning to identify these different species.
