Have had a gnarly cough the past two weeks that certainly has ruined hunts from a coughing fit in the tree or just kept me out of the woods knowing I’ll just blow up my spot with a coughing fit…

looking for some tips or products you all have used or use to suppress this nonsense.

I always have a few cough drops in my backpack for this very thing. If I had a persistent cough I might take a bottle or two of water or a thermos of hot coffee.

Depends on whether it’s a full blown no stopping it coughing fit or just mild. I coughed twice into my handwarmer this morning ( just waited for the wind to blow & went for it) …… no great call, but agree cough drops & a warm drink make a difference…..

Hadn't thought of it for a long time but a guy bout a mile from me invented and made a cough suppresser/can. I think he sold a few and then I don't know what happened to that project. So I'm guessing there was market for one.

I had a remnant cough at the beginning of archery season. Brought an extra hoody and just buried my face in it before coughing (as quietly as I could manage). It surprised me how well it worked actually. Had 3 deer walk right by my tree, including this year's freezer tenant.

Force yourself to breathe in through your nose when in the middle of a coughing fit. It isn't always possible but I have a theory that the nasal passages warm/moisten the air before it hits your throat so that decreases irritation. Now if the cough is hand in hand with a post nasal drip this may backfire, but a dry cough (like smoker's cough) it can help. That and I pull up my clothes and cough down into my armpit, seems to muffle it as much as I can.

Saw someone on Facebook advocate coughing into your grunt tube so it "sounds more natural" the other day. Can't say I get behind that advice but there it is lol.

Talk to your Dr. Get a some Tessalon perles....work like magic...

"The Cough Silencer"

I was gifted one after a rough season of hacking. Strange thing to use, but it works. I have it around somewhere, but unless I had a persistent issue I'd never bring it afield.

It’s weird, coughing seems to spook deer less than some of the actual deer sounds I make. That said, I try to get a big sip of water if I feel a cough coming, hold it in my mouth and swallow it bit by bit to lube my throat. Even if I cough after this, it’s usually a milder output. Halls with honey, or even an actual bottle of local honey, also have helped me. Got that trick from my singer friends.

Someone gave me one as well. Tube with a mouth piece on one end kinda. Hollow tube filled with some kinda filter material and open holes at the bottom. Suppose you could kinda make something.
Like an old plastic bottle, vent the bottom and pack it full of rags, cotton, or what ever.

Like the kind of device they used to use to minimize certain kinds of coughing/odors in the dorm rooms?
Not that I have any personal experience…

Never took mine apart or really looked it over, but that is what @Weldabeast posted.

Provided you don’t have any medical contraindications get your dr or walk in clinic to write you an rx for an albuterol inhaler. I have seasonal allergies w/ mild asthma, an inhaler is the only way I can get in the woods. I can drink an entire bottle of cough medicine and it doesn’t even touch my cough. Two puffs of the inhaler I’m good for at least 6 hours.

This is a new one for me. Very interesting.

PS thanks again for the prusik loops a few years back, they keep me safe on every hunt.

you’re welcome.
Albuterol is a bronchodilator. It opens up the passages in your lungs and also relaxes them. Throw an expectorant on top of that and you’re gold. Or get one with a corticosteroid which offers even longer relief.

All great stuff thanks! Hopefully I can kick this nuisance cold soon but at least I got some ammo to fight back next time!

I “commandeered” some albuturol thingies from a friend that had this damn breathing apparatus thingie. Pop one open and put it in a nasal spray bottle. That works well for me when I have issues.

Deer cough too, and sneeze. A persistent cough may be difficult to try and hide but I try and throw just a couple of grunts out if I have a cough. I do try to surpress the cough as much as possible.
