So I purchased the Silent Approach ROS and then grabbed an ocb from DanO. I thought maybe this would be a cheaper alternative to test the waters and if I end up liking it, I’ll buy Squirrel Steps! I have a few questions, what do you guys think of these steps and do you think the OCB can get tight enough to hold them well? If not, anyway to quiet a ratchet strap down? Any pointers for hanging/using ROS are welcome and Thanks in advance!!

I exclusively used the bullmans last season and tested different diy improvements like strap widths, ratchets and screws to help the step bite. I was also concerned with the ratchet noise, but also minimizing packing size. By seasons end I had em good and tight with a 1.5" ratchet strap and small screws pointing out the back of the steps. It was solid, but noisy and a nuisance pricking myself with the screws. With ratchet alone you could probably get them tight on most tree bark surfaces, but I never tried it. Search my other posts to read my reviews and see photos.

After meeting DanO at a Michigan saddle meet up I fell in love with the squirrel steps size and weight reduction. I bought em and was anxious to test the ocb strap. I wont go back to ratchet. It's a small buckle, but can still cam with great force and the steps do not move. Wow. Pack size is so nice too. I wrap em with the camo self sticking tape also from DanO to eliminate metal contact noise. I strongly recommend the investment for the ROS platform. Would like to try the Cranford ROS and I would opt for the ocb strap with those too.

I have a ros and DanO ocb buckle. My experience has been it depends on the type of tree. On a hickory tree the would snug up but would cant over to the side if I put side pressure on them. On a slick bark tree like a beech they were solid as a rock. The issue was in no way due to the strap, I think it was because the surface behind each step was uneven/had voids due to the bark of the tree.
