Smart watches. Let's talk about em.

Didn't have one when the thread was initially posted. Bought a forerunner 965 back in mid December after i I re-committed to running after a very long hiatus (15 years or so with a few intermittent months of halfhearted attempts here and there). I've been wearing it virtually 24/7 since and have logged about 160 miles running with it so far ramping up from couch potato status, so mileage will hopefully increase more rapidly as the months go on. I am liking it a lot thus far, I was never really a watch person before but the notifications without having to take out my phone has been a perk as well. I'm an android/Google pixel person so the apple watch was never an option for me. I haven't used much of the fancy mapping features yet, mainly because I know the trails around my house, but am looking forward to trying them out next month when I visit my family down in St Pete. I also have never listened to music at all when I run but may experiment with loading a podcast or two as runs are getting longer.

The watch face that I use which made my Apple Watch usage bearable is the California face. It gives me battery percentage, current temperature along with daily min and max temp, wind speed and direction, quick access to timers and current compass heading along with a second hand on the “analog” face dial. I really wanted more hunting functionality and for me this hits most of the high points.

We haven’t discussed it a lot as far as I remember but I think that if apps I use the most in the woods such as OnX go to a watch Apple will be the first they program towards. They’ve hinted at upgrades to watches in emails and surveys.

I found some hints at this too, which is exciting. Mostly because I don't understand why Apple doesn't let you view/edit your waypoints outside of the compass app on the watch. I'd like to be able to set a bunch in the field and then organize them at home.

Here is my watch face. I use it for hunting and the rest of the year too. sunrise/sunset, high/low with precipitation, compass and wind direction. Oh and time. and spotify for when I run.

only double watching it for the pic - about to leave for a run

Replace the quick access to timers with sunrise/sunset and this is perfect

Anyone try the alpha gear series? Or the Amazon T-Rex ones? Some say gps feature. But can't see any images? For what I would do, just being able back track would be all I'm interested in, or quickly going to a location with out pulling my phone out.
I bought an alpha gear raptor pro over winter break. It is great at tracking steps, heart rate, blood pressure etc. It does not have a gps option to track hikes etc. Texts come to the phone but you can not respond. Phone calls can be made and answered with your watch. Monitors sleep level also, tracks your exercise.

I used to use a Suunto that you could track your hikes etc, but the screen was pixels. It did not do the health stuff like the raptor pro.

I would say if you want a watch to monitor heart rate, steps, etc the alpha gear is a solid buy at $100

Yeah I felt the same. But I have $560 in the Garmin 965 that I will get back if I return it and my Apple Watch 7 has a trade in credit of $155. So after considering all that I figured the $100 leftover difference isn't enough of a hurdle if I decide the Ultra meets all my needs. The Garmin 235 was free from a friend, so I'll keep it either way but I thought it might add more to include it in the line up lol

I have 14 days to decide before the first return window closes.

It’s a hard no for me. I’ve never got along with watches; I break and loose em and don’t really benefit from their features. I don’t have a need for an expensive and delicate device strapped to my wrist. I’ve always felt like they were more
Likely to get me pulled into a woodchipper or bandsaw than they were to help me achieve any good. But to each their own.
