Snake Season

I shot the first copperhead I have seen here in the yard last week. I was out doing yard check with the 20 gauge, and seen some delicious looking black raspberries, ripe for the picking. It was as I started to reach for the fruit that the hourglass pattern jumped out at me... About 3' from my foot, coiled right at the base of the berry bush. I thought of my little ones, and how much closer they would have been had they been harvesting the berries... Which they were doing just a couple of days before!
Kentucky is a whole different ballgame from Michigan.

They're really not that bad. North American snake bites are crazy survivable, even without treatment. And most snakes would really rather not bite. Even the "bad boy" water moccassin would rather stay still and let you pass on by.

I gave up wearing boots because they're uncomfortable and expensive. Plain old uninsulated Mucks for me, or crocs.
Careful Nutterbuster One of those nice docile “Badboy”water moccasins bit me in the back of the calf in 1995 on a 40 degree November day as i stepped over a palmetto.Fortunately for me it was a dry bite but i was still treated for infection and spent almost 2 days in the hospital.

Got a picture of it? We’ve got quite a few corn snakes here that look very similar. They can be worth a lot of money!

Scouting today i was within striking distance of a 2ft, thick bodied cotton mouth and he quietly moved off but the 16'' black racer struck lots of times....I'm a firm believer in venomous snakes don't want to bite you. It takes time and extra energy to produce venom and during that time they can't feed and are essentially defenseless so they are very selective in using their venom. Watch your step and move slow in the woods

These bad boys are my nemesis. Was glad I had some extra TP on this walk through the woods.

I've always thought about getting some arrowhead snake boots with Dan's snake chaps, but I think most bites are below the knee if walking. I just take my time, but don't wear snake boots. As the person above stated, it's 'cheap insurance' and I should probably get a pair.

Glad you're ok. They definitely have fangs for a reason. BUT...

you did prove my point by pulling through. Hope you gave better than you got, and bruised his head in the appropriately biblical manner. :)

Interesting about those low temps. I've ran into gators and snakes during January, which is our coldest weather. They never truly go away on the gulf coast.

The only people I personally know that have been bitten were 2 old ladies tending their garden and a jogger running right after dark on a dimly lit road. I personally avoid gardens and jogging to avoid bites now! I also watch NatGeo shows where the locals wear just flip flops or no shoes in countries that have snakes that will truly kill you in minutes.

This thread is just our special spring version of scent control. Everyone of us has an opinion and we are all wrong and right at the same time. If boots or chaps make your day, wear them. If not, don't!

Just a plug for any of you guys who smoke ...Death by Lung Cancer is the most preventable cause of death there is.

Not only will kicking the habit help you LIVE ...it might even make those walks a bit easier.

This along with hornets, wasps and yellow jackets are God’s only mistakes after creating thousands of universes. Wow He is good!!!!

I picked up a cow killer once. Once. Good thing I’m a bull or I wouldn’t still be here. Do not EVER pick up a cow killer. My hand felt like I had jammed it down into molten lava. Not cool.

Pardon me but I'm from Michigan, what's a cow killer??

It’s called a velvet ant, but it’s actually a flightless wasp and it’s sting hurts like nothing else I’ve ever encountered. And those sob’s are tough too, you can stomp and stomp on them and unless you catch this spawn of satan just right between a rock and your boot then drag him back and forth you will not kill. In fact, they seem to relish the attack

No, when I shot, the sucker flipped over and writhed for a few seconds, then shot down his hole! Couldn't believe he still had enough in him to get away. I'm figuring there is no way he made it long, though.
I was bummed, too...I wanted to get a closer look.
I just took a look at some images of the corn snake...I see the similarities you are talking about, but i got to say, I'm 99.9% sure it was a copperhead. I burned their images into my mind when I was studying up on "things that could kill us" in Kentucky. Made sure the kids seem plenty of images, too.

Haha that’s funny that you made a “things that could kill us” list. I love snakes but I’d kill any poisonous one in a heart beat too! Good call on killing it

Killed a scorpion in the house this morning. Never seen one before until I moved to Alabama. Had no clue they had them here. Killed several in the last couple years. Hadn’t seen the 1st roach in the house but we got scorpions. SMH
Got some Tal-Star coming in. House will get a good soaking.

We have had our fill of brown recluse spiders since we moved in here. She said last night... Well, at least we can swat those, some people have things like scorpions in their house. I'll give that an amen.
