So you thought I was nuts when it came to the swaider/knaider.....

I like it... Food for thought.
How bout adding a squirrel step to the strap to gain another step?
Essentially adding your hooks to an OCB strap that has a squirrel step on it. Or make your hook straps as loops that could be girth hitched on the OCB strap to allow for adjustments?
1. Swaider up
2. Knaider up
3. Step up

I think this is awesome but I still think you’re crazy.

I get it. But think about it. Easy to tie on, strong, and once you hook in you are not going anywhere. There is the risk of kickout, as with an aider, but that can all but be eliminated with proper form and lineman use. You can always use a tether for added safety. I am already using my hands to hook the knaider and swaider when using the WE Steps as a safety measure (so I do not miss hooking on), so I am already climbing in a very similar fashion. Not sure this is better the the Step and knaider/swaider combo but I will continue to peck away at this because it is darn close.

I have been thinking about it. I have a couple of ameristeps I may try it with. For now though I want to make sure this works before adding another element. Great idea!

The other thing I am kicking around is using that strap setup for the WE Steps. For the life of me I cannot believe I have not thought of sewing webbing on both sides of the step and using the cam and hook option. So stupidly simple! Webbing would be less bulky than the ropes and much easier for most people to use.

Primal steps use webbing and cam buckles (no hook). People here seem to usually cut the webbing off and put ropes instead. Go figure.

Would you still cam it over or use the ratchet to get the stand offs to bite into the tree? I’ve gotten pretty good with my steps now but at first a cam would of been a way easier!

I would still cam it over. Like you I can tie it on in no time, but every once in a while I'm on a tree with some tough bark, big flat spot or some other irregularity that takes a few tries. Sometimes I just say screw it, and just don't set it perfect, let it slip a bit when I stand on it because I know it will lock in place. But I hate it when it locks in place at an angle, especially since I use the knaider/swaider. The webbing idea may allow us to really fine tune rope tension with very little effort.

Yes but with a hook it could be a game changer. I will sew one up tomorrow and try it.

I dunno if the cam buckle and hook will beat the WE for weight and bulk or even effectiveness, but I do believe a flat hook makes cam buckles more better.

@Peterk1234 Ive totes with an aider and strap on steps. Next is knaider. The option you have with two knaiders hooked while attaching the next step will be nice.

Great idea. Looking forward to video. Currently do knaider/swaider. I'm alright with it, like you said with pinning yourself against the lineman, but I'd be alright with dropping the steps for straps too. Just got a sewing machine so let's fire it up
