Soft shackles...?

Anyone ever contemplated using an amsteel soft shackle to replace caribiners? It seems that no matter how hard I try while one-stick climbing, I always seem to hit the stick with a caribiner...even with it taped, it still has a bit of a thud to it...?

There are multiple threads already if u search

I toyed with them and ultimately, for the application I was trying to use them in, I ended up not using. In the dark with chilly fingers it was sometimes a pain in the butt to get it undone. I was also trying to open and close as high as I could reach so that added a degree of difficulty to become with

I don't use any but I do believe they are useful in certain situations. Just keep in mind any rope to rope contact can possibly cause heart from friction. Amsteel doesn't like that. I don't climb with stick so can't comment on that.

I have a small tote that holds hunt gear that I throw in the truck whenever I go. Kill kit, extra biners, big packs of batteries, etc and I keep my 3 soft shackles in there so I have them with me...just not on me. Certain situation may come up were that would be just the right tool for the job and I can easy stash in my pocket..

Sometimes the weight of a real biner helps....think about throwing it linesman around a bigger tree with no weight on the end of the rope

What saddle do you have? All of mine have custom adjustable bridges made of climbing rope/accessory cord....

Why? When I climb, I make the bridge as short as possible, that way the carabiner stays close to my body and doesn't clank off of the stick. Then when I get to hunting height, I lengthen the bridge to my desired comfort setting...

I use one in cold temps when I hunt in my Firstlite Solitude jacket which has pass-through openings (intended for access to bib pockets) that I feed my bridge thru and reconnect to the saddle with a soft shackle. Keeps from hunting with my jacket bunched up at the bridge or having to tuck my jacket under my saddle.

It's been discussed. Several of us freak at the thought of climbing without something that locks. I'd use a soft shackle for none life support (like platform or sticks) but never for anything connected to my saddle like tether or lineman's lanyard.

If your carabiner is fully stealth stripped and your stick/platform is stealth stripped, then I think you're good. That noise isn't loud enough to me to justify moving away from a locking carabiner.

I agree wrap the carabiner or use heat shrink tubing on it...... it silences the majority of contact points... although those full bury amsteel soft shackles would probably be just as strong if not stronger than the carabiner. The shackles bite down ridiculously hard though

I think a primary concern was cross loading, etc with a soft shackle seen as similar to nonlocking climbing carabiner.

I could definitely see that being an issue. A few years back when I started climbing, I had a fixed bridge and I bought the double eye amsteel that west marine sold. It was 1/8” and about 8” long. I used it as a short bridge then after getting tired of connecting and carrying two different bridge options, I went to an adjustable. It’s amazing how much of the marine industry stuff can be used in our applications. The bosom chair and pulleys work in trees. The rope grabs used for anchors, are a mod offered by eastern wood on their sticks, even the very connection tethrd is using on the one stick is in essence a cleat with a holding slot. They sell them at west marine and g2 marine. Marine is the most heavy duty of any industry and some of those concepts are great. Now if those rope rolling grabs just had a sliding cover plate so the rope couldn’t pop out accidentally...

My bridge is adjustable. I'll have to try adjusting my bridge to be a little shorter, I normally have it mostly all the way out...

I definitely don’t recommend it but I think a soft shackle could be great for one sticking. It’d eliminate the concern of side loading a carabiner or the weight of a quick link. If it could be deemed to be safe for this application it would have some benefits over other options. They are crazy strong but I’m still not ready to try it in this application.
