Southern Storms

Thanks man. I had a tornado on the ground less than a mile from the house last night. It went south of me and north of a good friends house. No damage here except a few dead limbs in the yard. It was pucker up time for a while there, lol. I hate tornadoes and I especially hate the ones at night that a rain wrapped.

I've witnessed two here. One was in the daylight and the other after dark. Both were huge and did not look like funnel clouds. They were just big black blobs rumbling through with lightning popping in them. Both were very destructive. One demolished a school north of here. Luckily the kids were not there. The other went north and absolutely scrubbed my cousin's house off and only left the foundation. They were not home at the time. Someone found my cousin Josh's high school diploma in middle Tennessee and mailed it back to him. Their house was south of Tupelo. It then went on to demolish Smithville, MS. This was 2011, I think.

Iv'e only experienced what meteorologists call a micro burst which is just a very strong straight line wind kinda like a mini tornado and that was quite impressive and scary. Only lasted about 3 or 4 minutes.

I've seen where what I assume was a microburst hit. There was a spot on our old lease where trees were laid down from a central point radiating outward. It was weird looking. Trees weren't twisted, just laid flat. I also saw ball lightning once in my back yard. I was out during a heavy thunderstorm trying to quickly clear a drain and I saw a bright red ball appear about 8 feet off the ground at my back property line about 60 yards away. It was about the size of a basketball. It hovered there for a few seconds then disappeared with a deafening blast of thunderclap. I took off inside the house after that.

We had a micro burst tear up our town and flatten 3 houses back in july, one of which is our best friends in town. We lost a 24"diameter black walnut. Massive tree with a root system that was only 18 inches deep at deepest, but over 12'diameter roots Crazy how strong the wind can be and how quick they come on. I hope to never experience a tornado and my thoughts are with those of you that are. Stay safe everyone!
