Starting to toy with SRT

One of the "features" of the carabiner through the top hole of the ascender is the ascender will not come off the rope unless the carabiner is removed. Your Amsteel loop does not do this. An additional safety feature defeated.

Did not think of that, good catch. I will keep it in mind. I will play around and see if I make it come off without flipping the latch. In my experience, you have to perform two distinct motions to get it off of the rope, so I will probably be ok with leaving the way I have it. Plus, if the ascender comes off, I’m still connected to the tree.

I wish I knew. In my unprofessional back yard testing, I could not get a consistent grab with a ropeman 1 above my safeguard while weighted into the safeguard. It would straighten the rope out enough that it would not grab with the ropeman. If all weight was on the ropeman and no weight below it, no problem.

Ropeman1 performance is dependent on the carabiner you use it with. Could you be using a biner that is too small? A pic of the setup would be handy.

Yes. It does have the secondary latch to get it off or I would be VERY concerned. I have a foot ascender without that latch and it wants to pop off the rope frequently. As long as you know the issue you are GTG. Plus, as you said you are still connected to the tree with the belay device. I like how difficult these are to get off the rope.

Me too. And I have seen many rock climbers not using a biner through the top hole as well with the Petzl hand ascender. Always good to have someone else eyeball my setup and point out possible weak spots.

I look at it this way, the hand ascender is on my foot and not my RCH. I usually don’t connect a backup from the hand ascender to my RCH anyway so really, the most probable issue is the ascender falling off and landing on the ground and then I have to rappel down and get it.

Now if I was doing a long ascent in a canyon I would put the retaining caribiner in and connect the ascender to my RCH as a backup.

I attach the ascender to my bridge with a climbing sling. The sling weighs almost nothing and provides me with 2 life support attachments to the rope. I believe in backup at all times especially when it is so easy.

And that’s more than reasonable!
