Built 2 sets of sticks. 20” long. Been climbing all year with the 1/16” wall sticks. So far they are awesome. Anyone know how well the 1/16” wall sticks stand up? I also just received some .75” tube to build 1 stick. All I could find it in was 1/16” anyone know where I can fine .75” square 1/8” wall tube?

I'm not a metallurgist, but do a little research, I don't know how much stronger 6061 really is compared to 6063. I know with many welding applications you want to choose 6063. Hope this helps. Are you sure your sticks now are 6061?

6061 is the material of choice for climbing sticks. 6063 will not work in this application.

I built a similar set this spring using 1/16 6061 tubes. I used nylon spacers in two of my sticks and left my bottom stick without as I only happened to have a few spacers on hand. After a few practice climbs I took the sticks apart to inspect them. The ones with spacers show no sign of problems but the one without started to show some deformation around the drilled hole for the steps/standoffs. In response to this I ordered aluminum spacers and that seems to have solved that.

Do at your own risk of course. 1/8 tubes are standard for a reason.

Thanks. Couple questions. Did you put a spacer on the versa button hole? Where did you find the spacers?

I did not, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't. Just a personal risk assessment choice on my part. I'll keep checking for deformation but it seems like the standoff/ bolt is what takes most of the brunt force.

There's another thread here somewhere that has web links to a couple places. I used aluminumspacers.com, but someone else used another source that sounded better. I had to file mine down a little to fit them in the tubes. Not a big deal but cost me a $10 file and some time. Supposedly the other sights stuff fits flush as shipped. I'll see if I can find that thread and post it here.

I got 3/4 at online metals. The DIY sticks i made with 1”x 1/16 wall worked great. Im working on a 3/4” set know. With DanO’s standoffs.

Mcmaster Carr has the spacers.
