Strap for ring of steps

I have the bullman and fixing the have some ameristep steps. What is the best size strap to use. On my bullman I can't seem to get it tight enough. Just needing something better or bigger muscles
 
i was tired of them spinning i stitched some scrap leather strips to the strap on both sides.. made simple spacers between the steps that are adjustable and ran em through obviously you cant put the leather portion in the ratchet but its pretty darn sturdy and seems to lock them down a TON better.. I also had some caulks for loggers boots i used epoxy to set the inserts and screwed them in then i used bed liner on em.. I got bored been testing them on the tree out was literally horizontal on the sides of them couldn't get them to move a bit Obviously you are limited with the size of the tree and the leather will probably wear out in a few years but ill just make more straps :p Ill snap a few pics when i get the chance Im also gonna fool around with the cnc machines at my buddy's shop see what i can come up with just for fun
