I’m new to saddle hunting. I purchased a used Trophy Line to see how I like it before making a larger investment. I want to replace the original nylon belt tether. I already have a Summit lineman’s belt with prusik. Seems lime that should work as a tether.

what do you guys think?

That’s what I use as a tether! Works good. I do recommend taking off one carabiner and running straight through the eye. Otherwise it will fall down the tree

Nope. It probably is a good idea to replace the old nylon belt that you don't know what it's been through, but you also shouldn't use something that you don't know the rating of. Do you know what it's rated? I mean insert typical it's your decision blah blah blah statement, but honestly is that what you want to trust your life on?

I think he wants to replace the old belt with a new summit linesman belt

I understand what you are saying. I’ve searched for a rating. Not sure. That’s my concern.
The rating that summit gives will probably be like 400 lbs but in actually the rope will be much stronger and my carabiners that came with the rope say 25kn I think. As long as it looks good and you’re using the summit original hardware I’d say you’re good.

How are you coming up with it will probably be 400 lbs? The lineman rope is gonna be intended for work positioning, not hanging on, so I HIGHLY doubt that rope would meet ANSI. Even if it were 400 lb WLL at a safety factor of 10-1 it still wouldn’t meet climbing standards.

Don’t skimp on something you’re hanging your life on making assumptions that it’s good enough. All I can do is tell you guys, definitely do not use that rope, it’s a no brainer. Ultimately it’s up to you, but I wouldn’t have even chimed in if I weren’t concerned for your safety.

I HAVE the same rope man, it is designed and sold by summit to be used as a linesman belt or tether. That’s how I got the 400 lbs, it says that on the packaging.

Strong Enough? I like the title of this topic. Generally I look for 2X (Strong Enough). I would not care to use for LB not tether. With that said I want my LB to be a backup for my tether. So I would not add it to my gear.

Okay, lol. The way you said it made it sound like you were guessing at 400 lbs. Honestly it’s probably still not strong enough for saddle hunting depending on the safety factor they used (probably 10-1), that would put the MBS around 4k. You should be looking for at least 5k if not 5400 if you want to try to hit standards.

Contact Summit and see what they say about it.

When I was buying rope I was looking into the ANSI and UIAA certifications. Sometimes NFPA. Obviously we don’t really have standards to go by, but I think it would behoove us to follow those guidelines.
