Talk DRTy to me

I wasn’t a fan of rappelling on the Blake’s hitch. I may still use the figure 8 and an auto block. It seemed to be a little rough on the rope.

You may want to look into the unicender and a foot ascender. I find the other methods too sweaty and noisy for hunting.

Rappelling with the Blake's hitch is ok if you go slow. I went fast once, that was enough. I am not in that much of a hurry to get down.

You drt veterans, what’s a good rope for drt smaller than predator? I’m debating on buying predator again or trying something else just a little smaller. I do like predator for grip and feel, but wondering if there is something comparable out there in 10mm or so. Bonus points if it would do well with SRT or work with ascenders fairly well too.

You don’t want to go any smaller than 11mm because it doesn’t slide as well over the crotch and it burns the heck out of your hands when pulling. The larger the diameter the easier it is to climb on a MRS. two good alternatives to Samson predator is the ECW camo rope from Wes spur or Deep Woods from all gear (sold at knots and rope) both of these ropes weight about 6.2 lbs per 100’ and are 11mm where the predator weighs 6.6 lbs per 100 and is 11.4mm. Hope that helps

Also all these ropes work with an ascender as well. Although for SRT I prefer smaller kermantle ropes

Well I mean I use an extra hitch/ascender and a foot loop when I climb drt so the rope doesn’t have to be perfect for grip like the tradition Blake’s hitch and hip thrust but I get what you’re saying. Maybe I should stick to predator…

I have Samson predator. I love it. But I also purchased 150’ of deep woods and it’s really nice and also like 11 cent per foot cheaper.

My wife uses a hand ascender when she climbs as well but she despises a foot loop lol I just double Blake’s and use my hands. If I go to the trouble of ascenders and a foot loop, I just gonna use my gri gri and SRT lol

For the vast majority of my hunts last year I did DRT on 75’ of predator on paracord presets. The only thing that beats this system to me is SRT on a 9mm rope. I found that using a carabiner on a prusik was the fastest way to tend the Blake’s. You just need to find that sweet spot for it. I love DRT. When it’s basically the only thing you have to pack other than a platform or squirrel steps, I don’t mind carrying the 75’ of predator.

My first season using DRT, I climbed on Samson arbor plex. It was 13mm, 16 strand and bright white. Of course by the end of that season it was a nice dirt shade of grey lol
It was the easiest rope I’ve ever climbed on though. Predator, ECW and deep woods all work great but that 1/2” arborplex climbed like a dream

I played around climbing trees all last summer and then didn’t climb a single tree using drt during the season. I’d like to try it again because it’s fun and to give it a fair shake.

did you run into any issues climbing last season? Were you on public? Were you presenting trees? What would you change if you were doing it again this year?
