Team 10

Tracked over creek bed and about 150 yards. Crossed a slough. Blood still looks solid. Didn't have to get down on hands and knees. Jumped him at 40 yards heading north. I'm sitting down again for a few hours. Not feeling great but staying positive. Fixed blade 1.25" single bevel may be helping the blood situation. Just trying to beat the rain.

Blood looks dark red which says liver to me, fatal and he will bed back down and die. Figure if he took a 150 yard run before bedding down and you jumped him, it’s likely that he will do another 150 yard run and bed down again.

If you are sitting around take a look at some topo maps, he headed and bedded to an area he likes, if you can find a similar spot 150 yards in that direction he might be there if the rain gets to you. Take the time to walk back to where you shot him, walk the same 150 yards and get a general idea of what kinda trails and turns he likes to take. If you have an OnX or similar map system it can paint a good picture of where he is headed. Look to see if blood is better out of left or right side, when he gets to brush or a split in the trail which way does he prefer to turn, if brush or high grass, how high is the blood when he walks by on grass or leaves. Try to get a good pic of a few good hoof prints while you are walking to compare to others when trails split. If you know he stood in one spot, lots of blood and all four hoof prints see if you can tell which hood he leads with and spacing…. All this is to waste time but gain a lot of info if rain comes.

All and all.. waste the next hour doing this or something other than thinking about “if” he is dead or not. Calm minds make for better tracking. He is dead, just a matter of how soon you will walk up on him.

Thanks for the info and positivity. Just left at 1230. I did two laps going from shot to where blood just about stopped. A drop or two here and there and just tried following his tracks. It's possible he could've looped back into the little cypress strip where I was having trouble finding blood again.

Going back with a dog this evening after work.

Got back around midnight last night after going 3/4 a mile with the dogs. Put a camera out to maybe get some pics of him and give me some closure. Tracker had some insight that helped piece it together. I'm embarrassed for as much shooting as I do at the house. I wasn't patient and panicked when the time came. Keep going boys! My time is running short. I may have a 2 week window left!

Only a spike came through tonight for me.
And I know I struggle w taking a good shot when the time comes. The adrenaline goes through the roof and makes me as dumb as a rutting buck.

Record heat and humid today....it was brutal...almost as bad as the skeeters. I opted to go to a known spot and sit elevated for the first part of the morning. Didn't see anything and got down 9 and started walking. The water levels are way down so the normally too deep ditches they use for fire breaks were lower than the waders so I walked the ditches and eventually saw 2 does. I thought I took some pics of them but I must have hit the wrong button. I tethered to a tree 5 feet from the creek and sat for a little. 2 more does showed....possibly the same pair I had just seen? My good hunting buddy that I gave my guest permit and I ran to town for a sit down lunch in the AC.. after we got back I put on some miles looking around with pretty much all the trails I found and walked leading to dead ends. I probably could have just keep walking but I was saturated in sweat and legs were cramping up so I set for the evening and didn't see anything. The skeeters were real bad especially since I didn't have a thermacell .... Hooray for head nets. We be back in the am

I sat all day today, saw double digits of deer today (well I think it was the same group of 4 does in the AM and the PM) but they all stayed 45+ yards away and just teased me as they grazed and stopped perfectly broadside, just out of range. Only one buck, following the does in the AM and had disappeared in the afternoon. May try a different spot I hunted last year next time I go out, unlikely that I'll upgrade my buck but I've got a few more months to try.

Just posted us up another 5 points! Took me a while, but finally had a good shot at a doe last night and connected. Today I went in to my "magic tree" and within 2 hours had 3 shooters come by. 1 no shots at, and the other 2 got to fighting and when they broke up, I chose the wrong one to draw on. Never got a shot and had to let down. I will give it another go tomorrow AM.

Good luck this weekend to the fellas hunting.

I really can’t believe my trip last week was that dry. But the weather really killed it.

I should be able to at least get a second doe, and very likely put a buck on the board first week of December on the permit gun hunt I drew - I’ve killed does all 3 years at this property, and bucks 2/3.
