TEAM 2 Thread (2023)

Opening day in MI :)

I was out all day on our opener here in NY (10/1) I went in on public in the am and buggered out three deer on the way into my setup I like to hunt in the early season trying to intercept them coming back into their bedding along a ridge line. I setup anyway but nothing came thru. In the pm I went to the spot where a couple of shooters are hanging and setup close to a road they cross every evening to go up on private ag and an abandoned public apple orchard. A forky with palmated tips came right under my setup but he’s just a youngin’ and nothing else was followed. I haven’t had the chance to be out since the opener.

Heart break this AM…have a cold front moving in, had the perfect wind but the deer came through to early for a shot.

Got down to head home for the afternoon and regroup for an evening hunt, quietly got about 40 yards from my tree and boom I’m 10yards from a 4x4 that came in an hour before shooting time…he has moss all over in his antlers, hard to spot, but doesn’t spook although he facing directly at me. I DIDNT NOCK AN ARROW BEFORE I STARTED WALKING OUT! (I always have an arrow nicked…). The buck is scanning and I spend the next 20 minutes slowly getting an arrow nocked and positioning my body for a shot. He suddenly stands up and quarters away to the left! I use the opportunity to get fully drawn. He looks over his left shoulder at me as I let one rip for the boiler maker!

My arrow flies by his his left side missing him by 6”!!!! He lightly spooks, runs about 40 yards back toward the tree line I hunt, stops looks back and trots off!

How. Did. I. Miss. My personal max shooting range is 30yds and I hunt river bottoms. I know I am hitting a 3” target out to 30yds. What happened? I walk back to the truck and with my heart rate pounding from the walk I toss out my foam block I keep in the truck. Rip an arrow and smash…dirt 2’ right of my target, and a terrible twang sound from my bow…! I didn’t notice that when I shot at that buck, probably because of the adrenaline. I inspect my bow and realize it must be the phone mount I bought to record my shots! I never tested it when I tossed it on yesterday evening. Fired another arrow, twang, smash, dirt. Pulled off the phone mount under my stabilizer, fired an arrow, swack. Bottom left corner of the 3” white circle on my target. Stacked 2 more at 20yds and 10yds as I emptied my quiver walking toward my target to grab arrows.

What a tough lesson. I can’t believe I didn’t shoot my bow after tinkering with it, I saw THP using it, it’ll work, right?! I can’t believe I didn’t have arrow nocked either! Hopefully I got it all out of my system now, headed out this evening after I spend a couple more hours with the family.

Wish you all better luck!!! Sorry for the novel but had to share in hopes it might be a good reminder and reinforce y’alls good habits! And I thank the Lord that it was a clean miss. I couldn’t help but to smile and say thank you Jesus.

I have a bow class today and then I’m done for the season except for a trapping class on the 21st. I plan on going out tomorrow afternoon after church in the am. Good luck this weekend to any of you team 2 members hunting!!!

I’m way behind on hunting

I haven’t made it to the woods yet

Killed my back fighting huge fire while working, home a/c crapped so getting replaced today & a million daddy duty responsibilities

Everything seems to happen during hunting season

I plan on contributing several FL bucks tho before season is over

After a week of scouting/hunting and never putting a stick on a tree, I was in a new spot yesterday. Had one bust out 100 feet from the Jeep, did a little map recon and headed out. 200 yards down a ridge I spot a doe meandering around feeding on acorns, and another deer further down the ridge doing the same. waited till the moved off, snuck in and finally got into a tree. In the next 3 hours had 3 more does wondering around, never got closer than 40 yards, and a young spike at 13 yards for 30 mins, feeding and working a small scrape. Thought really hard about wasting an antler tag on him, but I only get 1 before gun season in Nov, so he got a pass. The wind that was supposed to be light shifted to 25 mph gusts and didn't see anything for the rest of the day. If it's open be back in Tuesday.

Was up this afternoon. Three does came through but I’m being selective trying to get a shooter on this public. Could have taken one of the does. It was a great night in the woods but then the rain started at last light. No horns.

Two does down in VA. Unfortunately, I forgot to get a picture with my saddle. Idk if we’ll get the points for them or not. Either way, I have more tags. I’m going to try to focus in on a buck now that I have meat in the freezer!

Maybe the saddle is in the back off the truck somewhere. I'm not very good at where's Waldo but if someone else on team 2 could find it back there it would get us some more points.
