Team 5 Thread

Yep, it seems like this week in the north east the conditions should make for ideal pre-rut hunting. I’ll get in a tree this afternoon over a scrape as soon as the rain lets up. Tomorrow I’m heading North for a few days in NH. I’m not sure how much of my time will be in a saddle vs on the ground…

Well my Michigan trip was largely a washout. It rained from the time I backed out of my driveway in Minnesota on Tuesday clear through Thursday mid-day. Was over there to hunt 6 times and ended up with 2 sits.
That sucks, but I had similar experience this week with rain. Did see a lot of action Saturday morning! Total of 5 bucks. I had a good 8pt run by me 3x’s chasing a doe hard but couldn’t get him to stop. Headed back out for a full week of hunting on Wednesday.

Well guys I finally got back out, loaded up the gear and the ebike, and hit the national forest to go pull cards and still hunt some productive areas before dark behind this cold front. Its been crazy busy for me this season and after I killed that buck on opening day Ive done virtually zero hunting since then. As I pull in, I discover the access to the area is being shut down by a local municipality early due to Halloween for some reason. What a freakin rip. I did my best just to swallow my entitlement and frustration and just turned around and headed home. At least I tried right?

Good stuff Lt! I’ve never seen 5 bucks in the same day since moving to New England. I apologize to the team for not taking an out of state trip this year. I get an extra week of vacation next year.

Missed a big 10 pt this morning! 135-140 class out of same stand! Ended up getting 1 of the does that he was following. He had taken off with the other doe after I missed!! She field dressed 132 lbs! Keep plugging at it Team 5!!! Good luck. IMG_5247.jpegIMG_5246.jpegIMG_5251.jpg

Found a spot in a public area I hadn’t ever hunted before, seemed like a good funnel area between several at fields so I gave it a shot today. Bumped a deer and saw a fresh rub getting in so I set up shop and climbed a tree right away.
Deer came from every direction.
Saw a small doe going Mach 5 across a picked corn field.
Had a buck about 75 yards away cruise through, hard to tell size on him.
Had a big doe working her way toward me from the north, she started to change course and was 33 yards broadside feeding. I had the bow off the hanger and was debating it when I heard something crashing through standing corn by me and then a buck was 55 yards away directly south of me.
I was hoping he would head for the doe but he just kept munching on what’s left of greenery, antlers full of dried corn stalks.
I begged and pleaded for him to come my way both under my breath, with a grunt tube, and a silent prayers to any deity that might be listening. I couldn’t get him to come in any closer. After about 10 minutes he headed into the standing corn on the other side of the funnel.
I returned my attention to the doe who had now browsed her way out to 42 yards, 2 yards beyond my self imposed absolute max range, never to come back inside 40 again.
I was cursing my luck on the hike out but by about a quarter of the way back to the truck I realized I was almost laughing to myself. I want to put deer on the ground but I am having some darn fun encounters this season for a guy who hasn’t been able to put blood on an arrow yet this year.
Headed back to that area again tomorrow.

I’m on Day 2 and it’s been a skunk so far.

Yesterday…..

I’m 6-3 and those broken off limbs are over my head. I climbed a tree about 80yds away in the direction that picture is looking. Saw a doe and a yearling on the walk out.

Today was a depressing day of scouting.

That’s all I’ve seen today.

Going to take out my new dog and my son and go pheasant hunt tomorrow. All about balance.
Nice. The forecast changed to 2 hrs of rain before dusk, it didn’t rain . It was all I needed to hear to take a break after logging some serious miles this morning.

Found some great sign yesterday and today. and I’ll post sign since i can’t find those things that make it..

took Friday and today off and got after it, but the back end of the season has been tough

firearm opens weds , curious how the already nocturnal deer on my cams will react

If they are anything like the deer I hunt they’ll go from hiding under rocks to hiding under rocks on the sides of cliffs covered in rabbit jail brush.

Still grinding here. Did something dumb and got after the closest thing to a target buck for me. I saw him twice last year and found his one of his sheds (don’t do the trail cam thing) but I assumed that on public he was gone one way or another; until I saw him in the middle of a picked corn field and realized he’s alive and well. So I have been chasing that dream. Saw him again on the move at 75 yards. Last week at 47 I thought I might get a chance. He disagreed and moved on. I shouldn’t be passing on any deer but I have trying to catch up with something out of my league. Story of my life. Lol. It’s just this nagging thing that he’s there and I’m so close. Got a bunch of antlerless tags I need to get after still and have time coming in those zones so I’ll keep grinding. Mixing in a little bird hunting and I’ll likely give up the big dream for anything with antlers soon since I’m running low on time off and days overall. I can’t keep it out of my head that I probably missed my chance at the big guy on a day I decided to go pheasant hunting but man alive, as much I I love deer hunting I bet I’m glad I made the choice that I did when I get older.
