Tell me about Tennessee...

Several years ago on a whim I almost bought a small ramshackle place in Arkansas on like 27 acres close to the Ozarks. I think of that place often... what are you southern boys' thoughts on that state?

I’ve only spent time in Stuttgart hunting ducks, got family there. Good people there for the most part.

Loved loving there unless you need social services etc. it’s great for a healthy outdoorsy family.

If you like to hunt and fish, it's pretty good. If I could just get the game and fish to introduce a population of feral chickens with a bow season, I'd never have to go the store.

It's the greatest state in the Union (and therefore the greatest state in the world).
Job market is very strong. Our GOP governor is a businessman who's new to politics, and he's very pro-business, so the job market figures to stay strong. Also, there's no state income tax (one of only four states like that), so you get to keep more of your wages than most other places.
The housing market is booming in the Nashville area, and it's strong elsewhere, but like most places, there are reasonable offerings, too.
I was born and raised in Middle Tennessee, and I'll stay here until I die, Lord-willing. Clarksville, Nashville, Franklin, and Columbia are all great places to live. East TN is beautiful, too, and you get the added benefit of the Smokies nearby. Most of the state has four distinct seasons, none of them being too hot or too cold for my liking.
There's limited public land around Nashville, but there's still plenty of good hunting to be had. Elk, pheasant, and quail opportunities are extremely limited, but deer, turkeys, and small game are abundant and have generous bag limits. Check out @catman529 's YouTube channel to see some of his hunting adventures in the area to get a flavor for what it's like here. The TN Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) also has a good YouTube channel that showcases some of the state's outdoor gems. Fishing is very good here on Reelfoot, KY Lake, Lake Barkley, Percy Priest, and Old Hickory, and there are plenty of rivers and streams to fish, too. Trout fishing isn't so great in Middle or West TN, but it's very good in the mountain streams of East TN.
Basically, I have nothing but good things to say about TN. I like the land; I like the people; I like the opportunities. Everybody's got to find their own way, but Tennessee is the place for me.
every thing he said!
Tn is fantastic, strong job market, If the kids graduate school here they get 2 years free community college. We just ought a house in Bear Creek, Al so we are moving down there very soon, but we really love this area middle Tn and upper Al

Memphis... never go to Memphis.
I had to get gas one night in Memphis. All of sudden I heard gun shots. Immediately got in our van and left. The wife looked at me and said "don't try to tell me those were not gun shots. "

Gun shots were nearby and sounded like a drive by from the tires squealing.

Since then, she is always making me carry my handgun on our road trips.

I stayed the night in Memphis when moving up to WI. Baby wouldn’t sleep in the hotel, so I went for a drive. I’ve seen some sketchy stuff, but no town has freaked me out quite like Memphis.

What's the wintering weather like most years? I've heard it's pretty mild, and snowfall rarely sticks around. We are considering a move to the greater nashville area, likely somewhere upto 1 hr south of Nashville.

I just got back from Gatlinburg and that place can suck it. I was bent because I had driven 8 hours just to be in a tourist trap of a city like Gulf Shores right down the road from me.

Now the smokies...that was awesome and I'll be going back regularly. Beautiful country. But it burns me up when people tear up the scenery to put restaurants and hotels and tourist traps in an area. They absolutely ruined the beaches down here in the name of a quick buck. "Wow, this place is so wild and free and such an escape from city life. You know what would make it nicer though? A city..."

But Tennessee in general is cool. Chattanooga is about the nicest, cleanest, safest-feeling city I've been to. And it's not blatantly catering to tourists. Or at least not the part I've been to. It seemed cool.
I wasn’t a fan of Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. Too many tourists and long waits... I try to stick to Blue Ridge or Elijay Ga these days if I want a mountain getaway. Still close enough to do fun touristy things but nowhere near the traffic or amount of people

I lived in goodlettsville for a couple years and really liked it. That area north of nashville is very nice just $$...we were in a relatives place and they cut us a break on rent since we had just had out first baby. Gallatin is nice. 1 of the winters we lived there the locals said it was a bad 1 and I really didn't think it was to bad...i would still live there if it haven't been for the flood in 2010....all work ceased, no paycheck, had to run home tail tucked. Murfreesboro was nice as well as franklin....seems if u and hour outside nashville u be good. I didn't hunt yet when living there but there are lots and lots of deer and turkey...much bigger than florida deer turkey

Winters are pretty mild relative to up north, but it's definitely a distinct season. Most days between December and the end of February are in the 25-45* range, though we have the occasional hotter or colder few days each year. We usually get 1 or 2 "good" snows each year that will stick, but they usually don't last for more than a day or two. Some years we don't get a single snow deep enough to sled on. This last week was the longest-standing snow/ice I've ever experienced here, and even then, it only lasted a week or so.

One more benefit to living in Tennessee: the Lifetime Sportsman License. For a one-time fee that’s determined by the age of the applicant, you can buy a hunting/fishing combo license for life at a really reasonable price. It ranges from $200 for kids under 3 up to $1,200 for adults under 65. I’m about to buy one for my newborn son (already have one for my toddler), and I thought back to this thread. What’s cool about it is the license is still good even if the applicant moves away. So, if you/they stay in Tennessee, it pays for itself over a few years, and if you/they leave, it pays for itself in one or a couple “out-of-state” trips back to Tennessee. Don’t know if other states have that, but my dad, me, my son, and soon my second son all have ours.
