I am turning 55 soon and just started hunting last year. Following this site and being persistent I was able to get my first deer (3 year old doe) for Illinois gun (shotgun) season.
I did this on Saturday and went back to the state park to get some garbage out I dropped (I dropped some stuff as I had to drag the 150 pound deer 3300 feet back to my car -- that turned out to be pretty hard -- thank goodness I work out ha ha). I measured the distance from the shot and it was 15 yards (so I could have done this as an archery shot). The wind was from the south -- so the deer did not smell me, as they came in about 20 minutes after sunrise from the field in the south -- and I was on the ground (it was a better spot than the saddle I did the day before)
Used a 20 gauge savage 220 left handed shotgun (those shells are EXPENSIVE!!!!).
Thanks again for all the tips and for everyone so freely sharing knowledge! I really do appreciate it!
