They all seem like pretty good shots to me. They just show stuff as it happens and sometimes it’s not perfect. I’d say 98% of hunting shows on TV hide all that sort of stuff. At least these guys try to teach about each situation they encounter which is rare in hunting shows these days

I’ll often show my wife on tv shows how the “celebrity” hunters lay the bow, rifle, backpack etc over the gut shot or spine hole and claim perfect shot yet the front half of the body is in perfect condition

The guys are excellent at setting themselves up for encounters. They are terrible shots from what I have seen on the deer tour. Every shot is back or second guessed culminating in a deer expiring in front of them after hours of suffering. Even the last episode, Zach calls questioning a shot he took etc. They need to practice their craft more. No point in even being in the woods if you have to second guess every shot you take. Love the show, lot of useful information, they just need to shoot more.

Never had a bad shot before? Looks like it happens to most bow hunters at some point, if you read the forums.
I think Jake's shot was back by like 2 or 3", and only because the deer was quartering a little more than it looked like. And in all of the episodes of Midwest Whitetail and THP, I can't remember too many suffering deer. These guys are stone cold killers, and rarely miss their mark.

There were a few episodes I caught where their order of operation was:
1. Shoot deer
2. Go home and get dinner
3. Watch the shot
4. Track deer

I get acting for the camera and drama, but hopefully that's what's going on. I started getting the vibe it was part of their routine to have to wait all night for an animal to expire.

Not having watched the episodes in question, knowing when or where the deer were shot, etc - unless I see the deer go down, I prefer to let it sit a bit regardless of how good or bad I think the shot was, weather allowing. No sense in convincing yourself that the shot was better that it was. If its at last light may as well grab some dinner, check the shot and blood, grab some buddies to help, and then go get it. Maybe that's just being conservative (especially hunting smaller parcels where I really don't want to bump a wounded deer to an even greater extent)

One thing to condider is the fact that they are hunting public ground and a lot of it is in more remote areas. Getting dinner and reinforcements for the track and then long drag out is a good idea. When in doubt back out. If I don’t see an animal go down that’s exactly what I do. Has paid off over the years too.

I guess it's worthless without an example, but that's precisely my perspective.

If you're remote in the woods, would you hike/paddle a mile and drive umpteen miles home, grab dinner and troops, let everyone watch your shot, then drive and hike/paddle umpteen miles back hoping you can find where you shot your deer and hope it hasn't been gobbled by 'yotes in the middle of the night? Maybe it's youthfulness, but I'd grab a snack from my backpack and sit tight.

Don't get me wrong - I really enjoy the dudes and their channel. They did that a few times and that just raised the hairs on the back of my neck.

I think this is an issue without a definitive right or wrong answer. As with a lot of things in hunting it comes down to judgement. Leaving an animal for 3 days before looking could be an obvious wrong to most, as could tracking a poorly hit deer immediately after the shot. However, I feel like everything in between is subjective, to an extent.

I agree it’s a great show and I definitely enjoy watching it!

Only a mile? If I don't know a deer is down I try to give it 4 hours. And if its a tough hike? I like to get some stuff packed out separate from the deer. If I'm taking that time and making video content? Of course look over the shot and may as well grab dinner. Unless you have reason to suspect a ton of scavengers, I just dont see where this would be especially abnormal.

But by all means share the specific episodes and we can quit talking generalities.

Problem with being on video for all to see is no matter what someone is going to disagree with how they do something.

I think what they show In comparison to other shows on recovery is sooo much better. I think way too many people who hunt attempt to recover too soon and from other shows I have watched over the years I believe in part that may be due to what is shown.

Another episode, another badly hit deer. Hell the guy who shot it didnt even stick around to track it. Thats as disrespectful to the animal as it gets. Mishits are apart of the game, but its more of a regular occurence if you watch the series. We all have things we can improve on as hunters, suggesting theirs is their accuracy isnt a bad thing, but its apart of hunting and from what I can see they need work.

Side note, pretty sweet watching them hunt from Saddles, just did my first sit in a saddle Sunday (All Day sit). Loved it.

Actually it was a double lung hit! As you saw the deer died 20 yards onto private land, and the one thing I do know about the fellas is that they err on the side of not pushing a deer.

It was a very well executed hunt and recovery - and their ethics are the same off camera. Personally I would have had a hard time not going on in those 20 yards...I wonder how many of us would have. The best lesson learned (again and again) is to do the right thing. The interaction and result with the private land owner was icing on the cake.

Congrats on an all day hunt in ur saddle! They are amazing and I sure love mine too!! Good luck this year and post pics when u get one!!

Ok which is it? And how the check are we getting these conflicting accounts??

One guy says they didn't even track it.

Another says it was a double lung that was recovered.

I must be the only one who will push the heck out of a wounded deer? I want it to bleed out fast. If I have the room I will push it track it and push it again.

I like the idea of finding them in a bed a couple hundred yards away instead of following pin pricks of blood for a mile or losing them completely. I need to start teaching my dog to blood trail. I've brought him on one double lunger that he followed to the deer before I could even point out the blood to him.

Which Episode are you talking about? I havent watched the most recent 33 with Ted in Missouri. I just caught up to the episode where the Hush Outdoors guy mishit and ended up using a dog and still couldnt recover it later when they thought they had it pinned down. If am coming across as bashing, let me be clear, I love the show and have taken some great info from it. I just think we need to be able to point out things each other can work on and improve to continue to grow and advance as a hunting community.

Yes Ted’s latest. And no u don’t come across bashing to me - we were just on different episodes!

All is well and I personally love all of us working together to make good hunts. One thing Greg told me early on was that the good, bad, and all in between will be shown. I agree with constructive critique to help all of us!!!

And now back to the Mantis! How did u like the all day sit? I just finished a morning hunt that got too windy.

Thats what I love about hunting! Everyone has opinions and tactics and strategies and you can take something from each person and add it to your bag of tricks. Always something new to learn and always something to improve on. For example the locating and hunting buck bedding is something that I have taken from the show and have started some ground hunting of my own just because its different and exciting. Love the show, aside from Teds mustache thats really the only critique I have haha.

The sit was great, I was concerned with the hip pinch everyone talked about being that my first sit would be all day sit without leaving the stand, but there was only minor discomfort and the saddle slid up and had to be readjusted here and there but otherwise I absolutely loved it.

Lol my wife and I have been encouraging Ted to shave that... to no avail.

I have been a TL guy for many years and was never skeptical on the Mantis. But I had also heard about the hip pinch and got the adjustable straps - that’s all I needed. Such a nicer setup than the TL - don’t get me wrong I love my TL, I just love the Mantis a little more. And the predator? Omg no more ring of steps for me!!! It all works flawlessly together.

I am still waiting for my predator! I made my own platform thanks to all the info and instructions on this forum using my LW Assault seat I had laying around. Wish the Predator was already in my possession! I will be putting it to good use either to close out this season or for many seasons going forward! I already have a couple buddies that are now going to be joining the saddle hunting community.
