Thinking about presets for next season... Advice?

If you get enough poison ivy exposure it can become systemic and pop up in spot that have not been in contact with the oils. If it gets that bad you should see a doctor and get a steroid shot.

Oh, I was at the doctor’s office by noon on Wednesday. I’ve never heard of it just popping up like that. It’s very likely that I still had the oils on my hands when I changed my clothes therefore spreading the exposure. I know for dang sure I took a leak when I got back to the truck.

Lots of good info here. I haven’t settled on a favorite GPS app because I am pretty familiar with the two pieces of property that I have hunted for years. I will say that when I find a new tree to hunt, I mark with an app called ‘What 3 Words’. I think it was developed to help people find each other at festivals. Imagine trying to find one person in a sea of humanity. I think it is accurate to within one meter. It usually takes me exactly to my tree with no markers necessary. I’m sure there are better apps for our purposes, I just haven’t messed with them. OnX and HuntStand get discussed a lot here.

preset everything with bolts. ORder a pile og grad 8 from ebay. 4 for ROS. Pull bottom 4 or 5 when you leave. when you come back to hunt, carry the 4 or 5 needed for the bottom and you;re good!

This right here...
There is no better preset option than a Treehopper mini drill with the folding handle and/or their power drill.

If I drill the tree late enough, I don’t need to leave bolts in it at all. I just pull them on my way up/down.

Anyone ever try cutting pieces of copper tubing to insert to keep the holes from closing up?

I saw some cool presets in the woods I hunted a few weeks ago. 2x4’s nailed to the tree and a plywood platform between three tree trunks. Awesome. Very affordable. I can make them from stuff I have laying around the shop. (Wink)

What could possibly go wrong? Just make sure to give those boards a good eyeballing for excessive wear every 20 seasons or so. And use a quality Chinese made nail from the bargain bin at Lowe’s for your fasteners.

I ran in to a guy coming out of some game lands this season that said he had hunted from on of those sets that he stumbled across that day. I guess Darwin was right.

Good ideas here. Different, but all have reasons and most are thought out to what works for them.

Imagine your scenario and think through a plan that works in that spot. Change the next season if you think you could improve.

Scouting, finding a tree and setting up are part of the fun. If you do kill there, it makes the memory of the hunt pretty sweet!

Thanks for the thought sharing. These are not necessarily "new" ideas to the site, but recycled and fresh threads are just fine.
