I went hunting today and used the throwball for the first time while hunting to get the rope over a crotch. My first throw went right though the crotch and I clove hitched the climbing line with several half hitches and pulled the rope up. When it hit the crotch the rope came off the throwline and all came tumbling down. Seven throws later, I hit the crotch again and tied the line on with a girth hitch with several half hitches. I pulled the line up and over and realized the line was too short for me to reach both ends from the ground. I tied a loop in the end going up and passed the throwline spool through the loop and pulled the climbing line up. There was about 3 feet of line on the ground when set in the tree. I tied my xbow to the tail of the climbing line and clipped on my pack pullup paracord. I RADS up the rope and set my platform at the correct height. When I was up completely, I realized my gear hanging strap was in the truck. I thought a bit and used my back band with carabiner as a bow hanging strap. There was nothing I really needed in my pack so I left it on the ground. After a bit of thought I realized I could hang my pack with the pullup line so I tied a figure 8 and hooked a carabiner on and it worked fine. I hooked up my secondary tether. I switched back to Bluewater assault line from the skinny 8mm rope I had been using. I always felt a bit uneasy hanging from the 8mm rope. I figured how much difference in weight was there in 9 feet of rope. After a half hour a doe came by and it was upwind so it did not know I was there. I used my only doe tag a few weeks ago so I could not shoot but could have if I had one. I measured my distance to the ground with my laser measurer from chest to ground was 24 feet. Finally, I was at a platform level of 20 feet. A few hours later, a light rain started falling and I decided to pack up. I lowered my pack then my bow and started descending with my Madrock Safeguard. I was about to remove my platform when I spotted movement which was two doe. I sat still for a while. They were downwind and they seemed to hestitate and eventually moved off. They probably caught my scent. I climbed down packed up and went home. I had my electrical rope pusher pole with me but left it on the ground under the tree since the I used the throwball instead. The throwball wasn't too bad to use but I have been practicing in the park for maybe a few hours over the last few months so that helps.

Why not use a slingshot, mason line and 1 ounce lead sinker to get you rope over a limb?
That might work fine. If the bark on the tree is rough the masons line may get hung up and the sinker would not have enough force to pull it down.
