Tide for cover sent

My thoughts are one that they may be curious about a strong flowery smell and two they may associate a strong flowery smell with a food source like ripe persimmons or muscadines. However, if they can smell the laundry detergent then they should be able to smell the human wearing the clothes.

I honestly do think there's got to be something in it with a calming, or curiosity, or non threatening smell to it. It's got to make you wonder, at least me anyway, when I had them follow my exact path & down wind acting calm & not on alert. Typically I'd at least see some pausing, nose licking & signs of skittish. Whatever the reason I saw less of that. Which has me really thinking about it. Could be coincidence, but it has been too consecutive. I always think how screwed I'm going to be & lucky to see anything, only to have things like that.

What if it's not a typo? Maybe he's pouring bacon flavored soda into the washing machine as a liquid detergent.

I am Southern for sure!

Okay now I'm buried in another rabbit hole....I've been digging through some dang gardening & flower forums, trying to learn chemistry, & getting useless history lessons. Also, got stuck for a while on learning about all kinds of herbal relaxants (google ghost pipe & tincture, that's a good read!). Anyway, there's several things related for deer in tide. First back the scents they say they use..

lily, jasmine and rose with warm wood tones and pine bud

lilys- "Daylilies (Hemerocallis spp. and hybrids, Zones 4–9) are not true lilies, but their similar flowers can be just as beautiful if also usually unscented. Unfortunately, they and the true lilies are favorite snacks for deer."

Jasmine....okay this is the strange part (I know it's all strange +insomnia can be a funny thing).
The flower people say jasmine is a deer deterrent but other flower people have big debates complaining that they tried it & it's always the first thing the deer eat & pointless & a waste of time. They get intense. I thought we get carried away, but you should read some Karon's over there.

So I dug even farther & found Tide: The History of the Smell of Clean in North America
They say something like..in the 60's they changed the perfume drastically. Basically cause the hippies body odor was so bad they had to figure something out. There was a huge rose & jasmine perfume shortage & prices were way too high because of demand. The solution was a more complex formula that lightened the rose & jasmine & evolved & intensified into "lily of the valley" with a very strong muguet aldehydic component.

So off to the dang chemistry forum I go. Basically muguet aldehydic component smells strong of lily of the valley perfume stuff which is made to smell like light rose, ozone (the smell before it rains), cinnamic alcohol, linden-blossom (a herbal relaxant!), green fresh cut grass. Okay now it's seeming a little more logical I may be on to something. A waste of time I know, but still. Add's up with what I'm hypothesizing about.

Warm wood tones....deer gotta like that right? Probably smells like a fresh cleaned house to them. Inviting maybe.

& Pine bud..... "Pine buds and the young plants are always a favorite meal-time snack for deer."

Hmm. I know I went off the rails but that kinda sounds like a good combination for deer.

Okay, after all this I might as well jump into the 2tc thread. Been keeping my blinders on, but probably need a different rabbit hole.

I think the thing many of you are missing about this “cover scent” is that deer noses are so strong that smells don’t get “covered up” for them. I think the comparison was made once that if we smell “chicken soup” deer smell “ chicken, water, pepper, potatoes. Etc” they don’t smell like we do.. they smell each individual smell because their nose is so long and has so many scent receptors. This why I believe cover scent is worthless. Might as well spray yourself with nose jammer

What kinds of areas do you hunt? In my region the bucks that live near suburban neighborhoods are completely different than the bucks that live in remote places. Anything unusual and out of
Place is a greater concern than the familiar…

I hunt suburban areas too. Unless you’re hunting a backyard or a hikers trail, mature deer have a “bubble” and if they smell humans within 40 yards of their safety bubble they are gone. A curious spike might not mind.. and even in the bigwoods I’ve had deer inexplicably stand down wind of me un spooked, but I don’t think your human smell or the smell of tide will ever work in your favor. Quite the opposite

Is it possible that the Tide is simply doing a better job of removing human odors? Or Maybe your scent free detergent isn’t scent free to a deer…

I mainly hunt remote forest. One area in particular is boat access only and a 10,000 acre island that's a wildlife preserve mainly uninhabited.

That's the main area I've had them appear to be very calm & curious which isn't the norm.

It's always impossible to remove human odor. Also believe in curiosity scents to a degree. Either way every deer I've shot has been within 40 yards & never shot a spike in my life. I know they're going to smell me either way, & do think some odors might have a calming effect or less threatful level to them.

Normally they're like, oh crap, I know that guy, pretty sure he's the one that killed my uncle, vs dang that guy smells good. I wonder where he's been getting all those flowers from. I wonder if he's got some more, is that a very strong muguet aldehydic component I smell that's relaxing me or is he just happy to see me?....you know something like that.

You guys are late to this party! I've been using Tide for several years because I like the smell and have seen zero difference in deer activity or getting busted. I also use Old Spice Stonger Swagger antiperspirant (pits, groin, and feet). Neither product has anything to do with the deer I see or don't see because I always hunt the wind, just as I did when using all the hunting sales gimmicks like scent eliminator sprays, scentlok, and lures. Keep buying those if it makes you feel better, but my deer are dying just fine without all the scent bs!

Have you ever walked into a bathroom where someone sprayed fabreeze to cover up the smell of poop? Did it fool you? I imagine this is the same thing for a deer smelling your cover scent. I can see the argument of just not worrying about scent at all, but no way does a deer smell your detergent and not smell human.

I think I see what you're getting at here...

... So I should burn a couple pumpkin spice and apple cinnamon candles near my set when I'm in the tree. :tearsofjoy::tongueclosed:
That would probably go well with herbal relaxants I was reading about.

If I keep up at this rate I may be hunting off a camo yoga mat next year. I'll just skip the bucket all together.

Sounds like a business plan. Hunters yoga supply lol

Should get Eberhart involved.

Put him in freshly washed tide clothing and someone else in Scentlok.

Then film the deer.
