Tree climbing Spurs...

thinking of trying climbing Spurs....... Really do not know much about them.

Looking on suggestions for which kind/brand to buy to make the experience and learning curve a good one.

Most on here prefer the Climbrite aluminum set because of the weight. Most any set will work though if weight isn't a big concern. You can get away with some cheap pads but they won't be comfortable while climbing. It's all in how much money you want to spend and how comfortable to want to be while doing it.

I don't mind spending money on quality/effective products...... I buy this way or don't buy at all. So what is the best?

I think for the price the climbrite aluminums with the aluminum cup pads are hard to beat. They are about 4lbs for the set and comfy to climb with. There are lighter ones out there but they are too much $$ for me haha

That's good advice. Search around on this forum and you'll find some really good info about using spurs with the Saddle system.

I bought the ClimbRight aluminum spurs with the aluminum cup pads. The only modification I made to them (and would have to be done to nearly any set of spurs) was switch the straps to webbing to reduce noise. I haven't gotten much practice in them yet, but I didn't feel uncomfortable at all the couple times I have used them.

I made the same mods to my spurs. Definitely the way to go. The stock leather with metal buckles are too noisy and cumbersome.

That is something that you do after purchasing. I get all my straps, buckles, webbing etc.. from www.strapworks.com

On the climbrights, you would use 1" webbing for the foot strap, and 2 inch for the strap around your calf. Clips come as single side adjustable (requiring one side of the buckle to be sewn in place) or in double side adjustable.
I ordered 5 feet of each webbing and had plenty left over.

i went a little overboard here and bought the geckos. are they worth the price increase? hard to tell, but they are light!

I ended up doing some modifications to them to get rid of the velcro at the top and the leather strap at the bottom. I added my own nylon webbing straps.

Don't want to hijack your thread but what's the noise like when climbing? We have a lot of pines down here.

Pines are obviously gonna be a little noisy but overall the spikes aren't louder than anything else. I can climb most trees making very little noise. The buck I killed last year was bedded about 70 yards from me and I was able to climb a maple tree 35' and he didn't have a clue I was there.

Thanks, that has been my reservation about buying them. I cant use them on public and my private is usually pretty close to bedding.

Probably already answered but... Do spurs technically pierce treebark?

In Michigan we cannot use anything that pierces the bark for climbing/affixing stands to a tree.

Yes, they piece the bark.

On hard trees you might be able to walk by it without noticing someone climbed, but on soft trees they can leave pretty visible marks.

You will love them. Take your time and start out low until you get the hang of them.
