I was going to buy a spare lineman rope to use as a tether from the local sporting shop, which usually carries them right next to the safety harnesses. I didn't read the box properly between talking with the shop guy about how they are completely cleaned out on harnesses and climbing sticks. I picked up a safety rope instead of a lineman rope. It still has a loop and knot, prusik and a good carabiner, but its 30 foot long.
Can I continue to use it as a tree tether for hooking up to and just leave the excess hang down, just knot it at a length to prevent me from falling all the way down, like a normal tether would have. Would this function as a backup safety plan, in the event of a fall to assist me to the ground? Does this present any extra hazards that I should be aware of before doing so? Besides the obvious of being careful not to tangle up in it while ascending and descending. anyone have knowledge in this?
