I was going to buy a spare lineman rope to use as a tether from the local sporting shop, which usually carries them right next to the safety harnesses. I didn't read the box properly between talking with the shop guy about how they are completely cleaned out on harnesses and climbing sticks. I picked up a safety rope instead of a lineman rope. It still has a loop and knot, prusik and a good carabiner, but its 30 foot long.

Can I continue to use it as a tree tether for hooking up to and just leave the excess hang down, just knot it at a length to prevent me from falling all the way down, like a normal tether would have. Would this function as a backup safety plan, in the event of a fall to assist me to the ground? Does this present any extra hazards that I should be aware of before doing so? Besides the obvious of being careful not to tangle up in it while ascending and descending. anyone have knowledge in this?

I used a safety line, but I cut it down as my tether and made sure that I tied a stop knot. I also upgraded the carabiners. I figured at some point I’ll get around to putting together a new tether with oplux

i don't see why it would be a problem. plus, you could technically use it as a hoist line for your bow and pack. I have a friend who made his tether long for just that reason.

Do what I did, I took the 30’ lifeline and cut it down into 3 tethers/lineman’s ropes with some leftover. Works just fine.

I did get some lighter Metolius carabiners. The steel ones they ship with the Ropes/harnesses are way too heavy.
