Tree Umbrella....Opinions????

Wanted to get some feedback from any of you guys who have experience using a tree umbrella with your saddle setups. Thoughts?

I use the Allen treestand umbrella. It works well as long its not too windy. I don't think there's much that's going to stop horizontal rain other than really good raingear. The support easily threads into the tree just above the tether hookup and the umbrella has ties that go around the tree to keep it secure. I have used it in both pretty heavy rain and wet snow successfully. This has enough coverage to keep my gear and bow dry while I'm sitting under it.

I always carry an umbrella with me while hunting. I dont care what the weatherman says the weather will be! I dont have a saddle but cant imagine it would be much different than a lock on. Might actually be better. With a lock on you have to put it up so high in case you have to stand up. With a saddle if your already standing/leaning it should be closer to you. If you are a sitter I think you can still shoot in that position without standing up?? I get all mine from Walmart. They are cheap but work well. And not much weight.
 
I use one when there's enough good back cover/ canopy to allow it and only in heavy rain. I just don't like to have too many gadgets to mess with unless absolutely necessary. That said, it works great with the saddle set up unless you lean way out which isn't very comfortable for most guys anyways. I tend to sit more than usual under the umbrella and only stand/lean to position for a shot. As for the brand, I can't remember, it's been about 10 years since I bought mine, if I can find a label on it when I get home I'll post it here.
 
I was looking at the Hawk wingspan but have not pulled the trigger yet. Too many bills to pay for from the last vacation.

I hate sitting in steady rain even with gore Tex. I bought a screw in umbrella years ago and it has saved a few hunts for me. If there’s rain in the forecast and I’m hunting I pack it. I’ll put it up and as soon as it stops I take it down. Def worth it to pick one up.

Ok I never used one with a saddle. Don’t see why it wouldn’t work. I will be packing one this year when necessary.

I can read between the lines...

I'm a tall guy, and a leaner, so my head is a good 40-45" from the tree most of the time. I have the one that screws into the tree and kind of wraps around it - allen maybe. When I'm leaning it doesn't quite cover me. But if I sit or stand next to tree on a platform, i'm fine.

If some up and coming hunting company wanted to build one for saddle hunters, a more rectangular shape that extended 4' from the tree, but also was adjustable to bring back in for shorter guys or for more compact setups. It wouldn't have to be 4' wide - 30" is probably great. I'm picturing A-frame that extends straight out from the tree....

The Hawk Wingspan umbrella comes out a good bit farther than the Allen.

Dimensions for the Hawk wingspan....
SIZE OPENED - 42" W x 60" D.

Looks like almost the perfect size. Seems quite beefy and from what I remember tightens quite well to the tree from reviews I read.

well dangit...I thought I was done buying crap. All I did was clear house, and replace all the things I sold with new things. That wasn't the plan...
 
I sometimes carry one when running and gunning for spring turkeys, especially when rain is forecast. I like it better than a rain suit since you can quickly deploy or stow it as needed. Also can double as a blind where legal.

I haven't tried it with the saddle yet. It would seem that the screw that mounts the umbrella to the tree might get in the way of your tether or you would have to mount the umbrella very high which somewhat compromises its effectiveness.
 
The Hawk definitely is beefier than my 15yr old Allen brand, especially the mount. The Allen mount is basically a 1/4 inch rod about a foot long with 1 1/2 inch of thread. I would think the Hawk would take more of a special mount for public land.
