I'm not going to be able to practice on my Se ohio trees prior to my hunt due to living out west. What kinds of trees are good to climband what kinds should I totally avoid.

I avoid pine trees, but just because of the sap.

Mature pecans and cottonwoods have very thick outer bark around here and can tear out. Just about anything else is good to go.

I was looking at the Kiwi-Klimbers - anyone have any advice about whether to get the long or short spurs?

Pine & AR Cedars (sap), Hackberry, and Black Locust (but maybe that is an obvious one :smirk:)

Personally, no matter the tree, I hate the longer spikes. I've climbed with short and long and have much more control/confidence with shorter spikes.

I’d definitely say get the pole gaffs. I have tree gaffs and here in Indiana they’re not necessary at all. Pole gives will give you a lot more contact between your feet and the tree and you’ll be a lot more comfortable.

Totally agree. I love the pole spikes. Tree spikes not so much lol
