@redsquirrel - that awl looks like the perfect tool for the job. I think I'm going to give it a try. I'll post pics.
I know I'm a little late to solve your webbing issue G2, but incase anyone else has an issue with their webbing linemen's belt. Use the 1" tubular climbing spec webbing & insert about 6" of rope (you can determine rope size by desired thickness of your loops) then tie your knots just behind the rope. The rope acts as a stiffener to keep the loops open & rigid against your harness making for easy hook/unhook up.
