I'm looking to add to my tactacam and go pro arsenal this season.

What would you add to it with a ~$1,000 budget?

Objectives: zoom, mic, higher quality video, could be used filming others

I’m interested in this also as GoPro is all I have currently
It’s the hero 7 at least though

A diy camera arm, rode video micro, camera of choice(Canon m50 with 18-150 for me)

I'll be recording with a lapel mic to my cellphone also

If I could only add one camera, it would probably be a camcorder. For a $1000 budget, I’d go with

Or

My ultimate (if I could afford it) would be a full frame DSLR with a few lenses, but that would total about 5K so it’s probably a straight no-go for the next 10 years for me.

If you don't want to do a diy camera arm, the new Out on a limb mftg camera arm would be the way to go.

Canon G30 for sale on AT. If you all are gonna drop serious coin on a camera in hopes of a truly serious youtube channel or to get sponsorships/career going, BUY A 4K or higher camera. This will save you money in the long run. Soon the 1080p will be obsolete (if not already). I have friends that were turned down on company submission due to sub 4k quality.

Panasonic WXF-1 and Sony AX53 are both great cameras in your budget and have cold shoe mounts for a microphone. I use a Rode Stereo Videomic Pro. Both cameras have excellent image stabilization, optical zoom, and low light modes. They also have a ring for manual focus which can be a huge plus.

@catman529 - You rank them the same? Or one eek out over the other?

They’re pretty comparable I think. The stock battery on the Sony lasts a lot longer, but the charger has to plug into the wall whereas the Panasonic can charge from any USB port. Both cameras can also charge through mini-USB but the charge rate is a lot slower for that.

I just picked up a Sony ax53, rode videomic go, and out on a limb camera arm....still trying to decide on a remote for the Sony

I keep hoping I can justify buying the Sony A7s iii when it comes out... that would work perfectly for a filming camera, as well as a fantastic photography camera. Buy once, cry once kind of thing.

I doubt I will ever be able to jump back into DSLR shooting again price wise, but I shot semi-professionally for several years during and after college as digital was starting to take over the professional world.

I figure that camera body, a 16-35mm f/4 lense, and a 70-200 f/4 lenses would set you up really nicely.
Maybe even throw a third lens in there to bridge the gap between the two lenses.

Thanks for the recommendations. 99% leaning AX53. Looks like it will meet my needs. Now to figure out a camera arm and other equipment needed...

That looks like a solid camera. Hopefully I’ll be just a few months behind you in getting a decent camera!

How many use their cell phone to film?

I do, but I really don’t put out content. I am just in the learning stages, and am using the phone footage for vlawg style shoots (that don’t even get posted) primarily as a way to learn the video editing techniques.

I won't bring my Cannon 80D into a tree for self filming..too heavy..too expensive...I'm starting out small this year with an old Sony HDRCX 440 (used less than $100.00) weighs 6.5 oz. and my diy camera arm weighs less than a pound. Not starting a hunting channel any time soon LOL just for fun.
