VIDEO for those asking how to rappel down after a hunt

I normally use a mad rock lifeguard or grigri because it's faster to setup but this is the basic and cheaper method. I use this when I one stick climb or climb with spurs. If you use multiple sticks to climb it's kind of pointless to rappel but still a lot of fun. If I were using the knaider method with the Stepps I think I would rappel down as well because it would be easier to get down and take down your stepps on the way down.

Great explanation! I also generally hang off my Madrock Safeguard and just use it to rappel. However I carry an ATC Sport and prussic as a backup to use when its helpful to have a free hand when descending (i.e. rappelling though close tree trunks or around limbs) since rappelling can be controlled with one hand on the prussic leaving the other free to push off with.. The only other difference to what I do is I use an adjustable bridge with a ropeman and I just cinch it up before rappelling.

I've thought about an adjustable bridge with a ropeman because it would be one less step but the short bridge I use is so light and I already had the rope so I just attach it when I am rappelling. I try to avoid all the metal parts I can when Im hunting.

Thank you for making a video and posting it @JCLINE84

i have been thinking about incorporating a rappelling system to use with spurs and as an emergency backup. How much extra rope are you carrying?

I carry a 45 foot piece of 9mm rope. You can use just 30-35 feet if all you're doing is rappelling down but I use that rope for SRT also so I needed 45

The red mini carabiner in the picture below is from my pull up rope (the black paracord). Once the bow is up I attach the mini carabiner just outside the girth carabiner. When I get down I pull the paracord and it pulls the rope tag end back down through the carabiner. It either loosens and drops or comes thru and drops. Either way the rope is free. I used to attach it directly to the carabiner but I sometimes had trouble pulling it loose since in order to get slack you've got to pull the tag end around the tree and overcome all that friction of the girth hitch. Sometimes the loop is set to tight for that to slide around easily. This way the only friction I need to overcome is the tag end sliding through the carabiner.

You'll notice that I back up the Safegaurd with a slip knot set back into the bridge carabiner and then route it back up to mini-biner just so the tether/rappel rope hangs straight down the tree. Obviously this is all undone before rappelling.

Thanks guys great information. Boyne I am a little confused do you need the red carabiner or can you just tie para cord to black

What climbing stick is that in the video? How do you have it strapped around the tree

I was originally attaching the paracord directly to the black biner but once in a while I was unable to the pull the girth hitch loose because to get any real slack by pulling the black biner the free end of the rope has to feed all the way around the tree. Its no fun having to go back up to fetch a stuck rope:).

By using the mini biner attached where it is the free end of the rope just feeds back up through the black biner while the mini biner slides down the rope as I pull it down. There's little to no friction associated with the loosening. Also, since I'm usin the mini biner to attach to my gear to haul up once I'm settled its already there anyway.

I would love to see a video of this. Very hard to get a picture of it by the description.

Glad you explained that you like that extra 10ft for SRT. SRT up and rappel down is on my short list of SH things to try!

Thank you now I understand

The 45 feet for SRT just let's me get really high in trees because you can only go as high as your rappel line but your tie in point on the tree might be way up

The climbing stick is a big game treestands climbing stick. Dont know the exact model. I have 4 of them. They're like a muddy pro stick but steel tubing with aluminum steps and tree brackets

Ah now I get it. Do you use the rappel rope as your Tethr? Does it synch up tight with the biner on there
Yes, It cinches tight for me once I load it with my weight but I'm a hefty guy. That's probably why I had trouble sometimes retrieving my rope when I was using the method on the left. Hooking my pull down as on the right alleviates that.

EDIT: I only use the biner to make it easier to unattach and reattach to go around branches when climbing with a single stick or WE Stepps. Since I am setting it in place I know I am not cross loading it. When using SRT to climb I substitute a threaded chain link for the carabiner since I can't verify its orientation from the ground.
