I'm looking at getting a set of 8 wild edge steps. How high up can I get with 8? Could I get by with 6 and get up over 20 ft with a stick and platform? I'm about 6'0-1" and have pretty long legs and pretty flexible so I can stretch up the tree pretty far. Ultimately I'd like to get the wild edge steps and reduce my weight going into the woods. My current system is over 20 pounds. With a set of 8 W/E steps and my 'platform', I'd be at about 15-16 lbs which would be ideal.

You’d have a hard time getting 20ft with just 8 steps unless you use some sort of aider. 2.5 ft is a big step with no aider and that would put you at 20ft with 8 steps. You could use a swaider and knaider with 4 steps and easily get 20+ ft. The wild edge aider would also allow you to reduce steps to get 20+ feet

It says you can get up to 14-16 feet with 8 and I have a weird DIY platform that's connected to a stick so that would give me another few feet. So best case I get 18-19 feet with 8 steps and a platform maybe?

It’s really not difficult to use wild edge steps with either their aider or another moveable aider. I have a set of 8 wild edge steps with aider and used 6 to climb and the other two to each side of the 6th one as a ring of steps. I’m not talking multi step aiders. You tie on a step at waist height and one at head height. Clip the aider to the step at head height and step into it and onto the step at waist height. Adjust linesmans and tie another at head height. Remove the aider from the step that is now at your waist and install it at head height. Repeat. It’s really about as easy to climb as just the steps. I don’t even use the aider on the way down. It’s about as simple as it gets that is legal on all public land for the weight. You could basically do the same thing using just the knaider. I personally wouldn’t be using a full climbing stick with platform attached. If I did I would use two more sticks instead of the wild edge steps.

I get really close to 20 feet with 8 stepps and no aider. It's actually easier than you might think. 2.5 feet per step, especially at 6 feet tall shouldn't be too tough. 20 feet is higher than it sounds IMO.

I would absolutely say go with 8 stepps and try it out. If you find that you cant go high enough you can either try the aider or just order 2 more steps. If you find that an aider and 8 stepps is too much you can also sell whatever you dont want. You could also use them as your platform or presets.
